Hi all!

I haven't seen a thread on this topic on this forum yet so I thought I'd make one (there must be some people on here who are similarly addicted to the game).

It's an opportune time to make a thread as well; as anyone who plays the game knows, the scout update is due to be released very shortly, no doubt to cries of 'overpowered!' and intense achievement farming.

What are peoples' thoughts on the new update? Or the game as a whole? What's your favourite class and why? Anything at all to do with TF2, let's hear it! :D

I think it's a wonderful game. It ranks up as the top five best Xbox Live experiences for me. Unfortunately, The Orange Box is dead for Xbox... It's a highly underrated console game. It is highly popular and can honestly be considered game of the millennium for the PC.

I really wish more people played it on Xbox360.

Can people who play TF2 via Xbox Live not join PC-hosted servers? Forgive me if this is a stupid question, I'm not much into consoles (well, not since the good ol' N64 era anyways) and my knowledge of them is distinctly sub-par.

If you manage to get on a server with a fun group of people who are interested in having a good time, it's one of the best games ever made.

Conversely, if you end up on a server filled with 'n00b!' type people who want to show off their 1337 skillz and care more about scores than enjoyment, it's the equivalent of pulling fingernails.

I like both styles of games. I love competitive gaming as well as recreational gaming. I'll never leave a room based on what type is taking place.

I only leave a room if there's cheating.

No, people playing via consoles (Xbox360/PS3) cannot play with people playing via PC. It would be nice if we could, since you can with Shadowrun. That game was awesome!

Yeah that always encourages me to leave a server as well. One time there was this spy who got crits with every single one of his revolver shots, which never missed and could hit you behind a wall.

When this was mentioned, half the people on the server were like "How do you know he's cheating, he could just be really good?" Because he can kill me in our team's spawn room with the shutters down whilst he's halfway across the map, that's why.

It's a bad design flaw to not allow those on consoles and those on PC to play together, I can' really see what the logic is. Can you get the updates Valve release off of the marketplace thingy when you're on Xbox360?

It's possible it's a compatibility thing between machines - admittedly this was a generation back, but I do recall reading an article about someone who homebrewed a way for Dreamcast users to play Quake 3 on PC servers. Much lag and epic pwnage of the console n00bs ensued.

I haven't checked out the compatibility issues for the current console generation, but maybe it's something like that? More likely it's just a question of cash - trying to get cross-platform compatibility isn't standard, and could well just not be worth it at this stage.

Anyway, TF2! :D *yay*

I play it on and off, but it certainly is an incredibly unique game - the art style is at once entertaining (Pyro's Tusken raider taunt FTW) and practical (can identify enemy types instantly even over long distances), and with nine classes to choose from there's something for everyone.

I'll be honest and admit that I usually load up as a Heavy - on one level, they're very easy to use - but if used properly (usually in tandem with a Medic and Pyro) they're unstoppable.

However, during my last stint I actually forced myself to play as different classes, especially the ones I used to be shockingly bad at (Spy, Sniper, Pyro) and I'm actually getting better at them. I know there's a class each player tends to gravitate towards, but the best players are the ones who realise that if a role isn't being filled and they can afford to relinquish their current, will then CHANGE CLASS. The number of times I've been on 16v16 servers and neither teams has a SINGLE MEDIC is just infuriating.

Heavy, scout and medic for me (probably in that order of use).

Heavy because, as you say, he's relatively easy to use, and getting 18 kills in a single life whilst he bellows "CRY SOME MORE!" is just too tempting. Grab yourself a decent (ie. ubers when you have ammo and aren't in your own spawn) medic and it' relatively easy to rack up the kills. Badwater Basin + heavy on offense = good times.

Scout because his personality scarily represents mine, and acting as the hyperactive jerk with twitch reflexes, triple jumping (with new FAN) over heavies and clobbering them in the back is, again, too much fun to pass up.

Medic because others rarely do, and when you're faced with medics who overheal snipers as they watch you burn to death in front of them you have to change to the class just to show them how it's done. I once ubered a spy on my own team, just to make said point. Then I got trashed talked to for about ten minutes straight...but it was worth it. ^_^

I'm shockingly bad at demo and spy, the latter so much so that I'm actually dreading the inevitable update because of my compulsion for getting all the achievements will clash horrendously with my abysmal skill. *FAILSTAB* *FAILSTAB* *FAILSTAB* :(

What's your in-game nick cabal, so I can add you to my burgeoning list of five Steam Friends :D

Yeah, pretty much. Think the best string of kills I got was when I was sandwiched between the bomb cart and a level 3 dispenser, and had a medic ubering me. 20-something kills + capture points :D

Scout because his personality scarily represents mine, and acting as the hyperactive jerk with twitch reflexes, triple jumping (with new FAN) over heavies and clobbering them in the back is, again, too much fun to pass up.[

...triple jump, you say. Man, clearly I haven't played in a long time. Scout is now my least played class, I think. Guess it's time to start forcing myself to "comma-1" a bit more often....

Lol :) ah the perils of proving a point by shafting your own team. Almost as good as committing suicide on Left 4 Dead team of quickmatch n00bs.

Yeah - I haven't yet gotten the hang of multiple knife kills, but I'm getting the hang of q-switching my weapons and cloaking properly. I think the spy could use an overhaul to be honest, don't think it's quite as intuitive as it could be. Then again, maybe all the good spies are running a whole pile of scripts....

"Tio_Holtzmann". Yours?

I have quite a few friends now from playing Left 4 Dead who all know each other from TF2, so once I'm back on Steam (probably not going to be until graduation at this rate....sigh) I'll try and get us on their server.

In my experience the medic would then switch the uber to a scout, the engineer would destroy his own dispenser in order to build it closer to a spawn point and the rest of my team would run away.

Maybe I just have bad luck with servers

It's only been out a little while, since last Wednesday I think, when the scout update came out. It's pretty difficult to pull off, you have to shoot with the shotgun (the unlockable one) to propell yourself after the double jump. Most of the time I go splat into the heavy's spun-up minigun :(

I want to buy L4D but the notion of it being co-op puts me off a bit. And the fact that if you end up with a bunch of headless chickens as team mates it's probably *very* stressful.

Yeah that's what I thought as well. The way they clock, disguise, stab, cloak disguise all in no time at all...it has to be a script. Surprised the VAC hasn't picked up on it.

Then again, maybe they're really good and I'm just terrible. I know an awful lot of people were mad over the latest update, which forces them to actually be behind the person when they stab, instead of leaping from a building like Batman and stabbing them as they fall like some kind of aerial acrobatics display.

Cool. If you're soon to graduate then I understand the anti-Steam decision. It sucks away time like nothing else :D

The perils of random spawns. I tend to play on servers from the same few providers, they're usually 16v16 which means it's insane but if you can survive and do well they're great practice. Also, the fact that most rounds go to overtime with that many people on a team is a good indicator of the quality of play I think....

Hmm...to tf2wiki I go....

Playing with friends is definite fun, and least you don't need any more than 4/8. Random matches can often be an exercise in sheer frustration - but then again, some of my best times have been in random games, from the time we found a glitching server that spawned zombie hordes at twenty times the normal rate to that week when it seemed like every server was populated by brand new players and giving them unhelpful advice :D. I met the group I play with through random games, and that's where we find most of our new recruits.

Yeah that's what I thought as well. The way they clock, disguise, stab, cloak disguise all in no time at all...it has to be a script. Surprised the VAC hasn't picked up on it.

Well, I'm pretty sure scripting uses valve console commands to rebind keys to a sequence of player events (weapon switch, fire, etc) so they're not cheats as such, but I'm sure in some circles they must be frowned upon...

Then again, maybe they're really good and I'm just terrible. I know an awful lot of people were mad over the latest update, which forces them to actually be behind the person when they stab, instead of leaping from a building like Batman and stabbing them as they fall like some kind of aerial acrobatics display.

Lol, ok I can't say I've ever seen that :D

I have no imagination.

Eh, mine's ripped off from Dune. :)

Doesn't mean I'm going to stick to it, so you might be seeing me sooner than you think :p
