  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

There is a snoball stand that has opened about a mile from our house. We were there yesterday and we were talking to the lady about if she was going to hire someone. She said yes. Taylor asked if it would be ok for her to do if I were there with her. The lady said it would be fine. So, she is going to make $5 an hour and all the free snoballs she can eat. She is going to work about 3 afternoons a week when school gets out.

Thats so awesome! I remembered how much I wanted a job at her age. good for her! :)
I am proud of her. She thinks she is going to be rolling in money. I guess a couple hundred dollars a week is a lot for a 10 yo, well not guess I know it is.

In my state, a child can get working papers at 14 yrs old but they are limited to the amount of hours per week and there is a curfew (no work after 9pm). I got my first job in a library and it was the best job I held as a young adult!

As for Taylor's 'job', there are plenty of 10 yr old girls that are paid to be a mother's helper in my area. It isn't unheard of for children of 10 to have 'jobs'.

What are you going to let Taylor do with this money?

She has to tithe 10%, she can pick where she wants to send it. She has to save half of what is left at a minimum. The rest we will go on an "I want this" basis. I think I am going to make her pay her half of the cell phone bill.

She really wants to go to New York and I wanted to take her for her birthday but when I got sick I couldn't. Since it was the first double digit I wanted to do something special. I am going to encourage her to save for that.

She is pretty much set with anything a 10 year old needs. She has a laptop, new bike, cell phone, Wii, digital camera, every Webkins made and clothes for days. So, she doesn't need anything. I am hoping that this will make her realize how hard it is to work for money. We will see if she is so quick to spend $60+ on a pair of pants when it takes her three days to make that.

The only big thing I can think of she wants that she doesn't have right now is a video camera and I owe her one for a late Easter because I wasn't working.

You should consider going on a missions trip instead of going to New York City. She really is submerged in a lifestyle that will not help her focus on the teachings of Jesus Christ. Don't you think she is too busy with gaining possessions to realize a need when she sees one?

I love that idea. My S/BIL sent their 14 year old down to your neck of the woods last summer to work on more Katrina clean-up because they felt she was becoming too materialistic. Every summer the youth from our church go on some kind of week-long missions trip instead of summer camp. The kids love going every year.

I so plan on doing that with my child and any future children when they are mature enough to handle it. I want it to be a part of his upbringing. I plan on beginning on a smaller scale in my own community (soup kitchens, helping out at the shelter, donating goods instead of money and actually bringing it to the site location, etc.)

I don't think that a mission trip would hurt her one bit, but I don't think either of us are spiratully ready to go one. We would not be able to stand the attack you usually go through when making a stand that big for God.

Now a couple years ago she would have been ready but since then we are not in the place we should be spiritually.

Laurie, you underestimate the Power and Protection of God. That is definitely the enemy lying to you! There are plenty of mission trips that are free from spiritual attack as they go places where people are hungry for the Good News! You would be surprised actually.

As someone who had a job growing up yet had no bills (so I could buy whatever I wanted) I will tell you I did not learn the value of a dollar from it. Even worse, I learned how to spend frivolously. I spent my paycheck on whatever I wanted and wasted it away so fast when I was in high school and I never looked back. When it was gone, I went to my parents for more money and got it. I knew I could waste it on anything because they would be buying me my back to school clothes when the time came, they would be paying my cell phone, they would be buying all necessities, they would be paying for extras.

In one of your other posts you said you are putting her child support money away and using it for back to school clothes. Perhaps as a better way to teach her the value of a dollar you could have her save her money from her job and use that for back to school clothes. You could put her child support money into a savings account for college or a car for her 16th birthday or a special trip later as a reward for saving so much.

I can't possibliy ask a 10 year old to work to pay for her own school clothes. That would be a reason to not want to work at 10, it isn't her responsibility to buy her clothes it is mine at this age. The fact that she is willing to work is great, I don't want to ruin that.
