  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I just decided that I am going to tackle the art of tatting. I have noticed that there is needle tatting and shuttle tatting. What is the difference between the two as far as technique? So far I have been working with a tatting needle.

Hi! I'm a shuttle tatter. Why? That's the way I learned. My grandmother (and her mother) was a shuttle tatter. I didn't even know there was such a thing as Needle tatting until I got on the Internet years and years ago. I have tried to needle tat, and I find that the shuttle was much easier to learn (for me). Without having much experience in Needle tatting - I thought I'd post a few links for you but I'm unable to post due to being new to the Forum. My advice....try them both - see which one works best for you - or use them both! There's no right or wrong device to use. You can tat with your fingers, a piece of cardboard, a bobbin.

It is always great to see other tatters - especially new ones! Many people say it is a "lost art". But it's not. There are hundreds of people still tatting away. Many of them aren't online. Just because we don't see it doesn't mean it's lost.

Let me know if there's anything I can help with.

Hey gatatter! I have tried the needle tatting and just can't seem to get it. I get the general idea, but the patterns just don't seem to be very clear to me. I suppose I am stuck in crochet/knitting mode. :/ I think that I may have to try the shuttle. :)

I'd think you'd pick up on the needle tatting it's so much like crochet. I'd be happy to help you anyway I can. The important thing is to get the Flip down. That's what makes the stitch. If your stitches are not flipping onto the base thread it won't come out right. you can email me if you need to: gatatter at gmail

Greetings, I'm a shuttle tatter myself, never learned on a needle. From what I've seen, needle tatting seems a rather elegant activity to behold in progress. I know what you mean about deciphering patterns and such. Like most needle craft, it has a language all its own that takes some time to master. Some trial-and-error is to be expected, especially if you're self-taught. UTube and other sites with video tutorials are indispensable for "show me" types.

I have tried needle tatting - several times. I'd start and stop and start back. To me, it is a bit foreign since I am used to shuttle tatting. But, I have recently achieved making rings and chains with the needle! I'm thrilled - but shuttle is my first tatting love. I am a tight tatter, and you just can't get tight stitches with the needle. Because you have to slide the needle through the stitches to form the ring or chain they have to be loosely tatted onto the needle.
