Tatting is quite the time consumer. Hours on hours, then start over cause the knot wouldn't slide.

I have a book my grandmother kept, she sewed tatted pieces onto the pages to keep them. Then, found several tatting shuttles at some antiques stores and have been teaching another friend how to.

Yes, tatting can be quite time-consuming. I commute by train so when I'm not sleeping  I have some time available. Your grandmother's book sounds like a true treasure! Antique shuttles are also difficult to find, at least here in So. Calif., so my collection is very small. I'm glad there are still a few of us doing tatting so the art doesn't die out.

ME!! I would love to trade/share patterns and sites. I love tatting. I use most any size thread. I learned using Size 10 crochet thread - that's what my grandmother used most. I have used Size 20 and 30, but I tend to snap smaller thread as I tend to be a tight tatter. I don't have any problem finding thread - Hobby Lobby, Michaels, and JoAnns carry it in the store and there are so many online stores now where you can purchase supplies. My problem is find the exact shuttle I like. I learned to tat using a red Boye shuttle made in Chicago. The ones today are made in China and are a thicker less sturdy plastic. I can snap the hook off of one with ease. I have to search to find the Chicago ones. I have several and I tend to horde them. I also have a few metal ones with removable bobbins but they just don't hold enough thread for larger projects. I am looking at the new shuttles by Handy Hand. Trying to talk my dear hubby into getting me a few. :) Oh! And I have a wooden shuttle I purchased online, LOVE IT! And a few wooden ones my dad made - they are along the lines of the Lady Hoare - flat without a post inside.
