What does it mean to take the Lord's name in vain? We have always seemed to equate this with swearing but it just occurred to me that is USING the Lord's Name in vain. The commandment forbids us from taking the Lord's Name in vain. This reminds me of the fact that a woman takes the name of a man when they get married. Probably the commandment is not about swearing at all but about individuals who claim the name of the Lord but do so recklessly.

I always wondered when I (or others) say; in surprise, Oh my God!
HD,

I am not passing judgment on you, but I don't say that because I feel it is taking the Lord's name in vain. That is my opinion though.

I had been wondering that. Being surprised isn't in vain though.
Notice how when awful things happen, many folk cry out Jesus! or God.
It is our natural response to danger.
Call upon the Lord.
HD,

If someone was truly calling upon the Lord I would have no problem with it.

Is that taking the name or using the name? We can place any restrictions on our behavior that we feel we need but are we free to make up our own laws?

do we even know God's name? It's not God.... so what would it be? Has he shared that with us?
We know He has no name. When Moses asked for one He had to make up one on the spot and He gave Him a verb. It was the Hebrews who made up lots of names for Him. Strange thing is He answers no matter what name you call Him. He is more concerned about those who take His name than about those who use what they they think is His name.

It must mean what it says. Claiming that He is your Master and not representing Him as you should. Making claims about Him that you ought to know are false, etc. We need to remember that those commands were not given to the "heathen" but to the "chosen people."

Jesus is an english translation.....
Whether or not it is an english translation someone still gave Him the name.

Senti's claim was that Jews came up with all kinds of names for God, and that God had no name.

What does the Bible say about Jesus' name?

When you are all alone with no competition why would you need a name? To distinguish yourself from whom. That they would need a name shows the extent of their problem.

I see you prefer to make sense of what you have rather than seek truth. There is nothing abnormal about that. It is natural to the greater number of humans. You need to read Kuhn's Structure of Scientific Revolutions.
