If Jesus knew he was going to die on the cross, why did he ask God for another way out?

The following is from c3powil:

Perhaps as an example for us. His words, "but not as I will, but as you will" are huge. The Son of God chose to follow The Father's will despite his own fear of the pain it would cause him (and sadness and fear it would cause his family and friends), because the will of The Father is the most important thing there is.

It also shows how human Christ is. It's easy to assume that because He is God, he doesn't feel fear or pain like we do, but this passage shows just how desperately he wanted not to die a torturous death like that. Yet he did it for the Father and for us.

It also is an example for us to bring all of our fears and worries to God in prayer, even those we know are against his will. As long as our prayers end with "but not my will" it is hard to go wrong.
