  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

SYRIAN INSURGENTS KIDNAP METROPOLITAN PAUL OF ALEPPO—BROTHER OF THE PATRIARCH OF ANTIOCH
On April 22, a Hierarch of the Orthodox Church of Antioch Metropolitan Paul of Aleppo (Haleb) was kidnapped by unidentified persons and taken to Turkey. The car of Metropolitan Paul was attacked and the Deacon who was driving it was killed, reports Sedmitza.ru with references to Amen and Romphea agencies.

Metropolitan Paul of Aleppo is the Patriarch's of Antioch John X own brother. Ten days before kidnapping of the Hierarch a rocket fired by insurgents hit the house where he lived.

Simultaneously with the Orthodox Metropolitan of Aleppo the Syrian Jacobite Bishop of the city of Aleppo (Haleb) Gregory Yohanna was kidnapped. Both hierarchs were at that moment in vicinity of Haleb overseeing the distribution of humanitarian aid.

Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople has presented his condolences to Patriarch John X of Antioch. Also, having learned that kidnapped Metropolitans were within the boundaries of Turkey he addressed Turkish authorities with request to undertake a search for hierarchs and to secure their release.

According to the Greek Church news agency Amen, the prime-minister of Greece Antonis Samaras directed the foreign minister Dimitris Avramopoulos to inform his colleagues about the kidnapping of Metropolitan Paul during the meeting of all foreign ministers of the NATO countries in Brussels that took place on April 23. The situation in Syria was to be discussed at that meeting.

The Greek people’s particular sympathy for Metropolitan Paul can be explained by the fact that he is a graduate of the theological faculty of the University of Aristotle in Thessaloniki.

Please keep them in your prayers.

KIDNAPPERS AND LOCATION OF ABDUCTED SYRIAN BISHOPS DISCOVERED
Sedmitza citing the Greek ecclesiastical news agency Romfea and the Kurdish news agency Firat News reports that the army of the Peoples’ militia of Western Kurdistan have determined the identity of the abductors who kidnapped Greek Orthodox Archbishop of Aleppo Boulos Yagizi and Syrian Orthodox Archbishop Yohanna Ibrahim. They are Islamists from Feteh El-Hesun, which is part of the Syrian rebel “Liberating army”. The Kurds surrounded the place where the abducted archbishops are being held, and have given the militants a deadline for the archbishop’s release. If the deadline is not met, the Kurdish army intends to begin a military operation against the captors.

VIOLENCE WON'T FORCE ORTHODOX FLOCK TO LEAVE SYRIA - PATRIARCH JOHN X
Patriarch of Antioch and All the East John X has urged the world community to end the violence in Syria and help free the two abducted Orthodox leaders of Aleppo.

"I take this opportunity to extend, on your behalf, in the motherlands and abroad, an appeal to the international community, urging it to do everything it can toward the release of hostages whose absence affects us deeply," John X said in a message "To the Shepherds of the Holy Church of Antioch."

"The speedy closure of this issue is extremely important in order to avert the risk of terrible consequences that would follow," he said. "Our appeal also includes an urgent call for action in order to find a quick solution to the situation in our beloved Syria; for the salvation of the people who are the descendants of an outstanding human civilization of thousands of years, and in order to prevent the risky consequences that could affect the entire region," he said.

"Since we are the children of the Resurrection, we are not afraid of whoever takes violence as a way to achieve his purpose. To be killed, or kidnapped, or to have our institutions destroyed, will not change our resolve to uphold our civil life and our co-existence; to cling to our homeland and to seek the reign of justice and rights in our homelands," John X said.

"Therefore, each and every one of us, whether in the Antiochian motherlands or abroad, is invited to express his concern and personal rejection of the recent course of events, aside from any political realignment. Humanity is the object of Christianity, for our Lord was incarnated for our salvation," the message says.

"As we are entering the time of the Holy Passion and Resurrection of our Lord, I invite you to reveal the unity of our Church who fervently gathers Her flock in all that is right and just. In this time, let us exceptionally intensify our prayers and supplications. Just as our Lord was not afraid to walk on the path of Calvary, in the same way we are invited to walk with Him along this path, being fully aware that by the Cross we shall conquer," the message says.

Militants abducted John X's brother, Metropolitan of Aleppo Paul Yazigi, and Syrian Orthodox Metropolitan of Aleppo Youhanna Ibrahim, on April 22. The deacon who was accompanying them was killed. The church notables were on a humanitarian mission in the village of Kfar Dael near the Syrian-Turkish border.

July 30 marked 100 days since Metropolitans Paul of Aleppo (The Orthodox Church of Antioch) and Mar Gregory Johanna Ibrahim of Aleppo (the Syriac Church) were kidnapped in Syria; however their fate and whereabouts remain unknown.
The kidnappers have not announced their demands and nobody has taken responsibility for the kidnapping as yet. It is not known either whether the Metropolitans are dead or alive, perhaps suffering under tortures, reports Romphea.

The heads and representatives of local Orthodox Churches who gathered for the celebration of the 1025th anniversary of the Baptism of Russia expressed their regret over the absence of Patriarch John X of Antioch from the solemnities: "We express our solidarity with His Beatitude Patriarch John X of Great Antioch and All East who has not been able to share with us the joy of today's celebration, as he had to stay with his flock at this very difficult moment. Our prayers are with him and with our brothers in Christ who are being slain every day (Romans 8:36).

“We are grieving together with all the suffering people of Syria. We demand the immediate liberation of the leading Christian Hierarchs of Syria who were kidnapped by militants as far back as in April—Metropolitan Paul of Aleppo and Iskenderun and Syriac Metropolitan Mar Gregory Johanna Ibrahim of Aleppo".
