  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

So my wife is in her last week of this pregnancy (we have a c-section scheduled for this Friday if he doesn't come before that) - and she's REALLY uncomfortable... Swollen feet, back aches, lots of braxton hicks contractions, etc...

...and now I've got a really bad backache.

I never get those.

Hmmmm....

I don't mind sympathizing with people, but taking on their actual pain is not in my job description. I have enough problems of my own to deal with.

My thoughts, exactly.

You may want to try some of your wife's exercises to help with the back pain. Get down on all fours and arch your back as a cat would.

lol - I just popped a few ibuprofen. Gotta love anti-inflamatories.

That's like saying you got a paper cut around the same time a friend was hit by a car...

Gosh I remember the first contraction I had during an induced labor, because it knocked the wind out of me. It reminded me of falling off my bike as a kid. I went down a steep hill full of pot holes, flipped over the handle bars, and then the bike fell on top of me. It was a whole body pain, and I couldn't move or even breathe for several moments. Exactly what labor was like! Except it just keeps on going for hours. And you don't die.

Most women say a guy can't understand the pain of birth. But when I mention kidney stones alot of them say I can understand then lol. Supposedly stones are considered the same amount of pain as child birth (according to many women).

Still though even if the pain is the same... all that comes after the birth is still NOTHING in comparison to a stone pain.

Know what you mean. Our first was induced - and my wife was miserable. We've heard that the contractions brought on by petocin are actually worse than the contractions during a normal delivery.

...and it was pretty much a bad situation all around (have a different word in mind - but I'd get TOS'd for it...lol)

They brought us in on Friday, and administered the petocin at 6am and kept her on it all day. By 10pm the water hadn't broken, and she wasn't sufficiently dilated/effaced...so they gave it a rest until the next morning. Then 6am next morning started it up again, another full day...until 12am when they said she was not sufficiently dilated/effaced...and asked...

"want a c-section?"

At that point - we just said...yes.

For a variety of reasons - I think that was a horrible decision on our part all around.

I didn't know your wife was pregnant?
But then I don't pay attention.
I'm too poor to pay attention.

I know I've mentioned it. My replies on the Excuses thread are probably too distracting. lol

If there's any other way, avoid the C-section. It's a surgery and germs can get in there. In terms of her health, giving birth the natural way is supposed to be a lot less risky.

Do you think your wife might accidentally kick or bump you as she tosses and turns dealing with all those ailments? Are you scrunched up only sleeping on part of the bed? When my wife was late in a pregnancy, she sure could take up a lot of the bed just to sleep comfortably, and I'd squeeze into less space. It could effect your back if you are sleeping a little differently.

I doubt I'm getting kicked by accident - but the part about being relegated to a smaller space could be a part of it.

The reason for the c-section is because she tested positive for gestational diabetes - which has the associated risk of the baby being larger than ideal. This one is already showing a bit bigger than our daughter was at the same point - so to err on the side of caution I think we're going to go with the advice.

Personally, though, I agree with you on the advice and I wish it was a "normal" delivery. Our daughter was a c-section as well - and it set forth a chain of problems (mostly having to do with how and what she ate/gastro issues/etc) for the first 6-7 months of her life. I think those would have been avoided had it been a natural delivery.

Both of our children were delivered by cesarean. The first was unplanned, but necessary for both her survival and mine. The second was planned because it was thought my son would be larger than my daughter (turns out, he wasn't) and would have likely caused greater complications with the previous cesarean.

As their mother, I'm thankful our ob/gyn saw the wisdom in doing the procedure.

My recovery after the first was 6-8 weeks. After the second, I was ready to get up and go by the next morning. No two people are the same, and every delivery and recovery is different.

Yep :) That's why we're deferring to the doctor's advice.

That all being said - in a perfect world I'd PREFER to have a normal delivery.

With our daughter - it was like this...

Gestational Diabetes -> C-Section
C-Section -> Medication
Medication -> Need to wait to give baby first feeding
Gestational Diabetes -> Need to test the baby right away for Glucose tolerance (therefore needs bottle feeding)
Bottlefeeding -> Didn't take to the nipple
Didn't take to the nipple -> Quicker than expected "Drying up" -> Formula
Formula -> Intolerant
Intolerance To Formula -> Gastro Issues/VERY Colicy
Gastro Issues -> 4 months of trying EVERY formula on the market until we finally found one she could tolerate - which also happened to be coincidentally the most expensive formula available.

Soooo yeah - it was all pretty miserable as a progression.
