Jesus said let your yes be yes and your no be no.

I try to be honest and never swear by anything. I know many people who lie a lot and swear by many things and I've began not to believe them anymore. If I question and they swear by something I believe them less. That's just me though.

Honesty, together with the Christ-like patience and peace of your attitude, is a normal healthy way to communicate your feelings of something or someone that seems to become a problem in your life. Unfortunately when honesty is mixed with an anger that seems to explode, especially with the use of violence, such as the terrorism in Syria that never seems to stop it's human destruction on the TV News, then we Christians can only pray and hope that peace will in the end bring silence to violence.:
Another way to express honesty without actually saying any abusive words is an abrupt interruption technique: just for example, like today, I was talking to my boss on my home phone and he was wondering if I can complete a huge job of delivering 2000 restaurant brochures in the letterboxes in three days, as I have been a casual part-time laborer for a decade now, I paused for a moment and calculated in my mind that the delivery is nearly 700 per day. Usually it takes an hour to deliver 100 as you walk along a flat street.
As for hilly streets it could be only 60 - 70 brochures per hour. I told him OK if no problems should occur during those 3 days like my old car breaking down or I need a day off because nobody I know can walk and deliver brochures 3 days in a row.:He said: "Try and get it done in three days because the business manager of that restaurant is expecting a large customer response for those restaurant brochures." Instead of saying abusive words to my boss, I tapped the number dial buttons on the phone in Morse code, and he wondered what was that tapping noise. I told him you better hung up now, I will call my phone company for service . ;'*;.

avoid doing that at all cost. The Bible does say strong words about avoiding that behavior. you will still occasionally hear non-Christians say it - but they don't understand what they are saying.

Besides the fact that this type of swearing is offensive to God - it usually also highlights the weakness of human character. I've known some pretty strong and tough people in my days ... anyone who had to "swear to God" that they were going to do something - was already a weak character and probably not worth trusting to begin with. Very few people will carry out tasks that require enormous personal loss and commitment ... and those that can - will do it without making any oaths.

The advice from Jesus to let your "Yes be Yes - and No be No" is an outstanding piece of advice. It leads to much better human character.

blessings,
Gideon

Genesis 21:23-24
23 Now therefore, swear to me by God that you will not deal falsely with me, with my offspring, or with my posterity; but that according to the kindness that I have done to you, you will do to me and to the land in which you have dwelt."
24 And Abraham said, "I will swear."

There is actually quite a lot of swearing by God to this or that in the OT.

Leviticus 19:12
12 And you shall not swear by My name falsely, nor shall you profane the name of your God: I am the Lord.
Deuteronomy 6:13
13 You shall fear the LORD thy God, and serve him, and shall swear by his name.

The OT practice of swearing by things, God included, is prohibited by Christ in his Sermon on the Mount.

Matthew 5:33-37
33 "Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, 'You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform your oaths to the Lord.'
34 But I say to you, do not swear at all: neither by heaven, for it is God's throne;
35 nor by the earth, for it is His footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King.
36 Nor shall you swear by your head, because you cannot make one hair white or black.
37 But let your 'Yes' be 'Yes,' and your 'No,' 'No.' For whatever is more than these is from the evil one.

James 5:12
12 But above all, my brethren, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath. But let your "Yes," be "Yes," and your "No," "No," lest you fall into judgment.

I wouldn't make a practice of swearing by God.

Is it wrong if someone asks you if you are telling the truth and you say yes - I swear to God. I did this not too long ago and now I'm not too sure if it was wrong or right. I was telling the truth, but wasn't sure if swearing to God by it was a right way to emphasize my honesty.

Avoid it in the future. Insisting that you are telling the truth is like admitting that you usually lie. Be honest to the extent that you become known for being honest, and you'll never have to 'swear' to anything again.

"I swear to God" is one of those throw-away phrases that we pepper our speech with that means nothing anyway. I'm sure you won't miss it. :)

From JESUS's mouth
Matthew 5:34-37

But I tell you, do not swear an oath at all: either by heaven, for it is God’s throne; or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King.
And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black.
All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.[g]

yes, your taking big risks by swearing an oath or going beyond yes or no.

God will hold you to account for your words, there is mention of swearing foolish oaths and the resulting pain. Like the guy who swears to the Lord to offer up as a burnt offering the first thing that comes out of his house, And then his daughter comes out praising the victory.

Jephthah’s Vow and Victory

29 Then the Spirit of the Lord came upon Jephthah, and he passed through Gilead and Manasseh, and passed through Mizpah of Gilead; and from Mizpah of Gilead he advanced toward the people of Ammon. 30 And Jephthah made a vow to the Lord, and said, “If You will indeed deliver the people of Ammon into my hands, 31 then it will be that whatever comes out of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the people of Ammon, shall surely be the Lord’s, and I will offer it up as a burnt offering.”

32 So Jephthah advanced toward the people of Ammon to fight against them, and the Lord delivered them into his hands. 33 And he defeated them from Aroer as far as Minnith—twenty cities—and to Abel Keramim,[a] with a very great slaughter. Thus the people of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel.

Jephthah’s Daughter

34 When Jephthah came to his house at Mizpah, there was his daughter, coming out to meet him with timbrels and dancing; and she was his only child. Besides her he had neither son nor daughter. 35 And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he tore his clothes, and said, “Alas, my daughter! You have brought me very low! You are among those who trouble me! For I have given my word to the Lord, and I cannot go back on it.”

36 So she said to him, “My father, if you have given your word to the Lord, do to me according to what has gone out of your mouth, because the Lord has avenged you of your enemies, the people of Ammon.” 37 Then she said to her father, “Let this thing be done for me: let me alone for two months, that I may go and wander on the mountains and bewail my virginity, my friends and I.”

38 So he said, “Go.” And he sent her away for two months; and she went with her friends, and bewailed her virginity on the mountains. 39 And it was so at the end of two months that she returned to her father, and he carried out his vow with her which he had vowed. She knew no man.

And it became a custom in Israel 40 that the daughters of Israel went four days each year to lament the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite.

Jephthah, well the Spirit of the Lord came upon him. He gets so emotionally caught up and speaks this foolish prideful oath. See how he goes so far wrong here?

I get really sick of hearing the word God used casually everywhere I go. People say God if they are mad or happy or drop something or for no reason at all.
It hurts a little to hear it used so much without any meaning.

To me, if someone swears to God, I almost automatically don't believe them.

If you are honest, why do you have to swear? Why the reinforcement?

Take Jesus' advice on this one.
