  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Seeing as one of the Commandments is "Do not use the name of the Lord God in vain", a traditional Christian should say no. I, because I don't believe in literalism, believe sure BUT it's extremely dangerous. If you swear on the Bible as a believing Christian and you do lie on the stand or anywhere where you're bound by that oath, you're pretty much damning yourself. People I've heard say "I swear by my chance of heaven". And sometimes they're serious but I've heard people who are kidding say this and I feel inclined to warn them.

I think a Bible is used more for swearing in an officeholder.

I've testified in court twice as an expert witness. Neither time was a Bible used. The clerk asked me to raise my right hand, and then asked me if I solemnly swear that the testimony I was about to give is the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. No "so help me God' and no Bible was produced. But maybe that's just the procedure in my jurisdiction.

I was being prosecuted in court almost 10 years ago, and i cracked up laughing when i gave the oath. The night before i was pretty relaxed about the case, and me and my girlfriend at the time were laughing about whether they'd make me say the oath, and she dared me to add on the "so help me god" bit at the end in an american accent (like you see on american tv shows). I'm not sure why i found that funny, but when it came to the time when i had to read the oath out from a card, i thought my girlfriend who was behind me was giggling and it gave me the giggles too. The whole court room must have thought i was nuts, and my local paper reported it too!! It was pretty embarrassing, and i got a stern telling off. They did ask me me whether i was a christian or words to that affect before i gave the oath, so i just said yes. Just for the record i chickened out of saying "so help me god". I didn't fancy a contempt of court charge on top of the two charges they were trying to prosecute me for. There was a bible though.

I depends on the state. I know that in North Carolina they use a Bible. There was a debate a few years back because someone wanted to use a Qu'aran instead.

I ask because I seem to remember reading something the bible itself says about swearing:

"But I tell you, Do not swear at all: either by heaven, for it is God's throne, or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King..." Matthew 5:33

But it is very strange that there is some tradition of oath making with the bible in courts. Strange because the only way swearing by the bible has any effectiveness is if you fear God. And if you fear God, wouldn't you be a Christian? And if you are a Christian, wouldn't you at least have read Matthew? And if you have read Matthew, wouldn't you answer 'Yes' or 'No', rather than declare an oath?

It troubles me because it means a whole bunch of people who revere the bible enough to swear by it nevertheless know so little about it that they would swear by it.

Matthew, after all, is not an obscure book.
