A survey of some philosophers was done to see what percentage believed what.

I'll just post the link because it's easier to read it there than for me to copy it out. Interestingly, there are some issues that philosophers seem to be getting close to agreement on (which I found surprising). eg: 72.8% are atheist.

The Largest-Ever Survey of Philosophers: What Do They Believe?

What percentage of philosophers believe in God?

I think that over time, truth begins to win out over non-truths.

Hi - I thought 72.8% was a decrease from what it was in the past? I might be wrong though.

Hmm. How are they defining 'philosopher'? How did they get their sample?

The first link openly admits the biases in their definition of philosopher and the limitations of the survey.

Edit: so does the second.

Well, yes, but that doesn't answer my questions.

EDIT: Ah, I found the paper.

It doesn't?

"in this case, their target group comprised predominantly Ph.D.-granting departments in English speaking countries, giving rise to an acknowledged bias toward analytic or Anglocentric philosophy"

The defined "philosopher" as people with Ph'Ds in philosophy. They got their sample by sending a questionnaire to a large number of philosophers.

Edit: nevermind...I saw your edit :-D

Hi - I thought 72.8% was a decrease from what it was in the past? I might be wrong though.

I dunno. :D

interesting that around 12% believe in no free will. i expected it to be higher, given advances in our understanding of how the brain works.

Yeah, I thought it would be higher. But compatibilism does accept that humans are determined, it just defines free will differently.

Personally, it makes more sense to me just to accept that we aren't free to act differently, so we don't have free will.

Well, compatibilism free will seems to get a whole lot of support. I was rather suprised that libertarian free will 'scores' so low.

32.3% other
25.8% deontology
23.6% consequentialism
18.1% virtue ethics

DO the last three (pr even all 4) have to be mutually exclusive?

IMO it is a viture to pursue the better (preferable) consequences and we have a "deontological" duty to do so.
