The only place you can smoke here now is your home, porch, car and outside when there is not an event like a ballgame or concert. All indoor smoking is banned except at the casino. I rarely see people smoking outside their home, property or car.

That may be true where you live but there are many places in the rest of the country where smoking is still allowed in public buildings.

I and everyone I know don't smoke around children, so you can't really put that on all smokers.

I've done an edit.

It's my health, my mouth, my clothes, why should someone make my clothes stink and my mouth taste of ash just because I decide to go to something designated as a latin dance event every now and then?
If it bothers you that much then avoid smokers.

People need to take a class in epidemiology, then read the smoking studies in full, then come back here and re-read the baseless vitriol. Second smoke is the biggest red herring since the invention of red herrings, and there are countless things you can do, and even more commonly, things you don't do but should that contribute to worse health than smoking.

If you don't want to pay for a smokers health care, then start pushing for less government and less socialism in health care.

You don't think I try? Why should I be forced to give up something that gives me confident because of other people's choices?
What a non sequitur, I mean that has nothing to do with smoking.
Maybe the concept does.

Eitherway this is going off on a long tangent away from the OP.

It reminds me of a time I was discussing smoking with a friend of mine who was astounded that I have no problem sitting in the smoking section of restaurants. Finally in desperation he asks "would you eat in a restaurant filled with toxic waste?"

We do like to take things to ridiculous extremes in this country, don't we?

I agree, my grandmother generally cooks oilly, salty 'full of cholesterol' meals and I couldn't tell you the number of times she has been in hospital.

When people refuse help (ie nutrition) then they are basically signing a death sentance.

I think sometimes people refuse help because of the sanctimonious, judgmental, or otherwise unhelpful manner in which said help is provided.

It's one thing to educate someone about healthier habits.. it's another to attempt to shame or demonize them into assuming said habits.

We can't force people to abstain from risky behaviors. Likewise, I think it's important to remember before pointing the judgment finger at someone who's engaging in a behavior we find to be reckless, stupid, etc. that, in all likelihood, that person could just as easily be pointing their finger at us for something we do.

I once watched a morbidly obese middle-aged woman (in the process of consuming two Whoppers, a large fry, a massive soda, and a slice of processed chocolate cream pie) self-righteously condemn some employees who were smoking in front of the BK. "Ugh.. dis-gusting. Look at them, sitting out there sucking on their cancer sticks. Why on earth anyone would smoke is beyond me! They're killing themselves, and for what?"

She kept going on and on, and it was all I could do not to tell her to go have a look in the mirror.. 'cause if she keeps it up, she's going to be dropping from a coronary LONG before that kid gets lung cancer.

We all have our vices. I still say that's no excuse for denying medical care.

I don't know any non smokers that smoke around children, so yes I can put the blame of second smoke being subjected to children on smokers.

I agree with you, and I apologize if I come off as being judgmental. I know for sure that I could eat healthier, and exercise more among other things. The thing is though that me eating unhealthy in front of someone isn't going to harm them directly. Now if I'm constantly cooking unhealthy things for my husband than I feel I have some responsibility in his bad eating habits. What I'm trying to get across is that a child is pretty helpless when it comes to his or her parent smoking around them.

I do think there should be distinction made between life saving procedures and elective procedures. I think its perfectly acceptable for a Dr. to tell a person that he doesn't think they are ready for an elective surgery because they are too overweight or they need to stop smoking. I think its completely different story when the patient needs a procedure to save their life.

What about those who have been educated but still continue on with their unhealthy habbits?
