For me, it largely depends on the age group spoken of. Younger ones often need more hands-on or moving-around activities to cement concepts into their minds. This would be in addition to the Bible story, something to help them understand or remember the story or lesson from the story.

For older ones, sometimes an intense discussion can be just the thing. I've been known to take out paper and pencils and ask them personal questions. No one will look at their papers or ask what was on them, and they can keep the papers or throw them away when finished. It's a way to get them to think. These questions might be on if they're saved, and what they did to be saved, on Christian behavior and how they do/did/would treat a person in a situation, or on what they think of what was done in a certain Bible passage. This age (3rd grade and up) are usually familiar with the basic Bible stories and are ready for some life application of Scripture.

I love group publishing's material for the younger kids. It has been very effective in our children's ministry program. The teachers love it and the kids love it. However in my 5th-6th grade class that I teach, the hands on nature is just not my style nor do I think as effective for that age group. It is easier to get them to think about things by asking discussion question. I make them write answers to questions. I typically follow a OIA, Observation, Interpretation, Application, method in my teaching. I want them to know the text and how to apply it to their lives.

With younger kids, stories are excellent ways to teach. When I taught Kindergarten, we I would tell a story and sometimes have the kids act the parts while I tell them.
