  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Suicide & sin.

All I can offer are my own opinions. Second question first: Do I think suicide is a sin? Murder is. So are a lot of other things. Jesus Christ died for those sins already. Even after someone is saved, and keep in mind I cannot make any statement as to whether or not any individual is, they're still going to commit some. All humans are imperfect.

It is my further opinion that we are only responsible for sins we commit knowing full well that it is a sin, but deciding to do so anyway, while rational and in our right minds. I believe that suicide is probably not done in that mental state. The argument can be made that suicide is by its nature unforgivable because you're already dead and cannot repent of it. I don't think God is so draconian. Furthermore, it's possible to commit a lethal act against yourself, and you can't take it back, but you remain alive long enough that you are able to repent before you die. So even the "you're already dead, you can't repent" argument doesn't always apply.

First question: << Staff Edit >> I pray not. Only God knows the definitive answer. Only God knows what was going on in his head. There is a reason why Jesus Christ tells us not to judge others. We don't know all the facts. God does.

Now, just for your information--you have asked this question in Exploring Christianity. That's a forum for non-Christians to ask Christians questions. So far, so good. Please keep it to just asking about beliefs and opinions. If your goal is actually to debate the logic and prove that the answers you get back are wrong, please don't bother.

Don't know. You have to take all the different factors into consideration and I don't have this information.

Do you think suicide is a sin?
Yes.

There are different kinds of suicide. A soldier who falls on a grenade to save his comrades is a hero. There are people who are angry at the fact that being alive, with all its difficulties, is something that was decided for them. They are angry at God whether they believe in Him or not. And there are clinically depressed people who need our empathy while they are alive - it might not keep them alive, but I think that is what we should take from the death << Staff Edit >>. And it's really not appropriate to judge someone who takes their life. My brother committed suicide and I know how much pain that causes in a family, but you just don't get judgemental about it.

I spoke to DeanW and he agreed to edit out about this being about a particular person. If previous posts commented on said person I'll be editing those as well- I just wanted to give everybody a heads up.

Thanks very much!

Do you think suicide is a sin?

Yes.

However, it is not a sin that is greater than Christ's ability to save. No sin is.

If a person is saved, suicide does not negate his salvation and God is not unaware or any less sovereign over their death just because they killed themselves.

Although I have a small quibble with the "God didn't call them home" part, I do believe Adrian Rogers said it best when he said about suicide victims who are saved, "God may not have called them home, but He will certainly welcome them home."
