Please recommend a good reformed study bible? Also, is R.C. Sproul a respected teacher in reformed theology? I've heard of MacArthur and Piper but not much of Sproul. Thanks!
Yes, Sproul is well respected. For a Reformed study Bible that helps to understand Reformed doctrine, check out the ESV Reformation Study Bible (Sproul).

Another good study Bible that is helpful in the study of Scripture is the Calvinistic/Evangelical ESV Study Bible (Grudem/Packer/Schreiner).

God bless

I would also recommend the Reformation Study Bible. However, I would suggest going on ebay or the like and obtaining one that contains the NKJV.

You might also consider The Spirit of the Reformation Study Bible (NIV).

I'm not a big fan of the ESV translation, preferring the NASB and HCSB for general bible study. I do like the NIV for general reading, preferring the NASB for serious study. I use a lot of different study bibles. I have the Reformation Study Bible (ESV), MacArthur's Study Bible (NASB), HCSB Study Bible, NIV Study Bible, Dake Study Bible (KJV), and a dozen or so more. I still fall back to my (NIV) Thompson Chain Reference.

Echoing the above, you might also consider the NKJV of Sproul's Reformation Study Bible if you can find one for sale. They are rather hard to find since the release of the ESV translation of the RSB. It is my favorite. The Spirit of the Reformation Study Bible contains what I consider the very best study notes, theological articles, as well as the major Reformed Confessions (also linked to in study notes), but I prefer the NKJV.

You won't go wrong with anything Sproul has written, or had a hand in editing.

Yes, Sproul is a fine Reformed writer. I think you don't hear as much because he's older and not as flashy as some. He is particularly good at understanding the Puritans and trying to bring their work into the current Church. His works are all worth reading, but i don't recall him getting involved in all of the controversies that Piper does.

He's the editor of the Reformation Study Bible. I have the ESV version. The notes are wonderful, although as a significantly more liberal guy I tend to use the New Oxford Annotated more.

You are the first Reformed guy that I have seen that has admitted to having the Dake Study Bible. I hope you disagree with most of the notes.

The Dake (KJV) was my first Bible after I became saved at age 32. Because of his notes, I was able to meld my scientific mind with my desire for Christ and His truth. As I studied Dr. Dake's notes, I started seeing some that didn't make much sense, or were a real stretch. Most of these I could overlook because the quality and depth of his other notes was very good. But, that's the problem when you rely on one person for commentary. The proverbial straw that broke the camels back was a note he used for some passage, sorry I don't know which one, that suggested that the various races should not mix. That this was against God's will somehow. Well, I knew right away that was wrong and attribute his biased view from his southern roots. Much later I found out he had a somewhat checkered past. But that's how I started, or should say restarted since I was raised RC until I left the RCC at age 20 or so. So I was saved at age 32 as a Non-Denomination Charismatic Christian. Listening daily to John MacArthur I started developing a more reformed outlook. I continued my in depth studies adding Unger's Two Volume Commentary on the Old Testament and the Bible Knowledge Commentary on the New Testament (I added the Old Testament when available). Now, I study mostly from the NASB, using various e-Sword commentaries like Gill, JFB, Believer's Bible Commentary, Unger's Old Testament Commentary, Bible Knowledge Commentary, Matthew Henry's Commentary, MacArthur's Commentary, Adam Clarke's, Reformation Study Bible with Sproul's notes, and a whole bunch more.

My Calvinists leanings started while still a Roman Catholic. But that's another story for another time. Sorry for rambling.

This. Both excellent choices.

The Reformation Study Bible (RSB) is overtly Reformed whereas the ESV Study Bible (ESB) is more generally evangelical, but still leans towards reformed theology--so a non-Calvinist would probably still be ok with most of the notes. The ESB really is the "Cadillac of study Bibles" with it's fully color in place maps and huge section of articles designed to help make disciples/catechize folks in the back. The only problem is it's HUGE and awkward to carry around (the only Bible I have which is bigger is the 1560 Geneva) and the Scripture font is a bit small. The RSB is reasonably sized and has a bigger Scripture font making for a more comfortable read, but lacks some of the nifty stuff in the ESB like the inline color maps.

Anyways, both are good stuff!
