  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

A question was asked in Singles that I found intriguing. Here, I have shamelessly stolen the topic from @redblue22 who is welcome to join this discussion as well. I would have answered his thread, had I qualified. But because it's in Singles, I can't post there. (I love my husband, so I'm glad I don't qualify.) Instead I posted here to avoid the restriction.

What practices in Christianity do you find a bit odd or questionable?

@TX_Matt stated in that thread that he finds it strange when a worship service is more like a concert and a motivational speaker. I was going to comment that I agree--but then I saw where it was posted.

(Please be respectful when you answer. Opinions are fine, but of course we can't have flaming.)

Thanks, redblue, for the idea.

I'll just copy my answers...

- Worship services that look more like a concert with a speaker than worship
- Obsession with the End Times
- Not taking communion/The Eucharist weekly
- "Greeting time"/Passing of the Peace
- Men's Groups and Women's Groups
- Political activism in the worship service
- Purity rings, balls, etc.

We went to a massive church and its worship did feel like a rock concert. Which felt weird. I mean I'm fine with modern worship music. But sometimes you can tell (God help me if I am wrong about it) when they rock out more for the "Check out my skills!" rather than doing it for the good of the Lord. Its also why I don't like christian concerts.

1. As for other things I find to be weird. Clicks. I am not sure why so many churchs have clicks (is that the right spelling?) where certain people hang out all the time but never seem to include anyone else.

2. Weird rules like women should only wear very specific clothes. Or telling people they are only saved if they can do something very specific. Or telling people they are only saved if they were baptized that that church.

3. Churchs the heavily embrace Halloween by renaming it (sometimes) as if that changes the holiday.

4. Overly negative talks about sex. Its fine to teach no sex before marriage. But I find most christians who get married seem to have sex issues in marriage because they think anything you try to do is dirty and a sin. They need classes for engaged (and married people) that aren't afraid to address the issue of sex so people can realize its a beautiful thing when married.

5. Forcing people to pray or talk. Especially at bible studies. I'm shy and laid back. I don't want to read verses out loud nor do I want to pray out loud for a group.

6. The practice of being a lazy church. No real ministry to the outside world.

7. Sort of like above, churches that caters to kids as if its a place of constant entertainment. And yet they don't focus anywhere else.

8. Nothing about missionaries. For sure we can spread the word locally but we should also try to focus on missionary work, especially outside the USA.

9. Overly complicated "memberships". Like having to agree to very specific terms like in our church you cannot sue someone in the church. You have to take it your problem before the pastor/elders and try and work it out. Sorry but lets say someone in the church accidently ran me over and I lost the ability to use my legs, I'm going to sue them. I don't care about the rules. My life is changed at that point.

10. Forced sermons/speeches about "You MUST tithe!". Or even worse if you don't tithe they kick you out.

11. Saying men should rule over women as in women are more like slaves then a wife. Such as they must cook you food, take care of everything, do as you command, have sex whenever you want...etc.

12. Purity stuff. I mean I am fine with it but all the rings and promissory notes you sign aren't going to stop the urges of two people alone in a room who accidently give in. Many people have tried and failed despite purity rings. I even had a paper on my wall I signed with my parents about staying pure, listening to them about who I am with...etc.

13. Not really doing anything with new people. Like when we went to that big church of course they asked during service if anyone was new. We got some papers but after that we felt like strangers for months. No one ever came up to us. No one talked to us. Its like we came and left as if we didn't exist.

I agree with you on all of these points. Particularly, I hate it when church or other Christian environments are filled with cliques, and not just because I'm excluded from those cliques. It's not biblical. We're supposed to treat each other like family and be one big family of God.
I also feel bad about not welcoming new people the way I should. I'm an introvert, and it makes it harder, but it's still no excuse. Just something I need to work on.

What practices in Christianity do you find a bit odd or questionable?
How about revivals, invitation hymn, and altar calls? They are NOWHERE in either Testament.
What about any of them is at all odd, questionable, or strange(from title) ?
I see aspects great perhaps related in Nehemiah, Psalms, Acts, at Athens, in Ephesus, Philippi, Corinth, and many more, perhaps - just might depend on what aspect(s) of revival , invitation, or service/ worship/ repentance you're referring to ?
(might or might not get to discuss in this thread/ section < shrugs > don't know!)

Well, we all find some things strange to do, that others find strange to leave undone. The variability in the answers is what makes the subject so interesting for me. So I'm going to operate under the assumption that everybody who posts in this thread is right. Even if you're directly contradicting someone else, you're still right, and so are they. So discuss away. Just don't fight. Sound good?

I get you on the "hey, check out my skills" motivation behind musical performances, rather than playing the music to glorify the Lord. As one preacher put it, "They think this is Star Search!" A lot of singers and musicians do hone their skills by starting out performing for church. They're in the choir, they do the solo during the offering, they're on the worship team. Then they go on to fame and fortune, and at that point, many but not all will leave church and the Lord behind. They weren't singing to praise Him. They were using the church as a training camp to get used to performing in front of an audience.

Which leads me to a little tongue in cheek thing I wrote some time ago. My family enjoys it. This does have a melody, but I don't know how to reproduce it here. Envision upbeat and cheerful.

One of the things that gets me is I am hearing more often these days in churches to 'invite the Holy Spirit' doesn't the Bible say that the Holy Spirit is already with us who are believers?
Perhaps , depending on so many other things ...
for instance,
Jesus is the Good Shepherd, and it is written that He Will never leave us nor forsake us, even to the end of the world,
and that all of His Sheep Hear His Voice , and will not follow another,
and so on....
oh, and many references to walking in the flesh, instead of walking in the spirit...
hardly ever addressed in a way to show or even realize the difference....
