This is one that I put up before (in song format).

One day, the prophet Muhammad saw an old woman carrying a heavy load. He went up to her and offered to help her carry her load to her destination, and the old lady agreed. Feeling very grateful to Muhammad (pbuh), she wanted to repay him, but she had nothing to offer but advice, so she told this nice, young man that he should be very wary of a trouble-maker she had heard about in Makkah. A menace. A man, named Muhammad, who was hypnotizing the youth with his words of magic. A man who was turning family members against each other, and pulling people away from the religion of their forefathers. She warned him to steer clear of that man, so that he wouldn't fall under his evil spell. Finally, the woman said to him, 'Young man, you are so kind, what is your name?' When he told her that he was Muhammad, the woman was surprised, and she then and there accepted him as a prophet.

I like this story because it makes me hopeful that no matter how much Fox News people around me have watched or listened to, if I deal with others with kindness and sincerity like a good Muslim should, then my actions will mean a lot more than any rumors or false claims about my religion ever will.

You know what, you post drama upon drama here and then cry for yourself. There is nothing wrong with Fox News and I watch it all the time, you don't like it because it exposes the stuff you don't want people to see, stuff you can't explain away. There are no rumors and false claims, I was a member of your religion and I know how violent it is, so stop sugar coating it. What is the purpose of this thread other than promotion of Islam, please?

This is in sharp contrast to Christianity where racism was, and still is, very common. Islam, thanks to its founder, is more egalitarian, whereas Christianity still cannot shed its image as a hateful, white man's religion.

I recommend you open a book and learn about Muhammad's "Raisin head" Ethiopians. Same Ethiopians who are devout Christians... Egalitarian... Ottoman! What a joke!

After the pagan inhabitants of Mecca had boycotted the new Faith a council was held to assassinate Prophet Muhammad..so members of each tribe agreed to stab Him as He slept in His bed.

Ali ibn abi Talib cousin of Prophet Muhammad and his son-in-law took His place and slept in His bed while the Prophet and Abu Bakr fled toward Yathrib (Medina).

"And We have made before them a barrier and a barrier behind them then we have covered them over so that they do not see"

~ Surih 36:9

The Assassins approached the house and were just entering when Ali confronted them..in their shock and dismay they fled.. Ali then proceeded to Yathrib (Medina) to rejoin Prophet Muhammad. He travelled barefoot through the desert and his feet were bloody and torn from travel.

On the joyful reunion with Prophet Muhammad the Prophet bathed his feet with His tears and the wounds were healed.

"And when those who disbelieved devised plans against you that they might confine you or slay you or drive you away; and they devised plans and Allah too had arranged a plan; and Allah is the best of planners."

~ Surih 8:30

I'm very sorry that that's how Islam was presented to you.

The mention of Fox News specifically was meant as a joke more than anything... I watch too much Jon Stewart. :)

I don't know much about Islam, but there's one story I like where prophet Mohammed criticizes a man who discriminates against a person of African descent. I can't remember the details, but he says something like this: Arab is not superior to non-Arab, nor White to Black.

This is in sharp contrast to Christianity where racism was, and still is, very common. Islam, thanks to its founder, is more egalitarian, whereas Christianity still cannot shed its image as a hateful, white man's religion.

I agree that Muhammad (pbuh) was anti-racism. He appointed Bilal, a former Ethiopian slave who he had Abu Bakr buy and free, as the one who would call all the Muslims to prayer. When 'Umar, the 2nd Caliph, would see Bilal coming, he would say, 'Here comes our Lord and Master' in reference to Bilal. That kind of attitude was unusual in those days.

I do have a wee bit of advice, though, Simon... perhaps there's no reason to 'contrast' anything you mention with anything else... especially when the contrasts can be offensive. Racism exists in the Muslim world today too, though it oughtn't.

So it is all about presentation ? To a child that is growing up in a culture and society that have been around Islam since 8th century?

I was at the gym last night and caught a bit of O'Reily. I think you'd admit that he may push thing a bit much. He's basically the Olbermann of Fox though, so I can only take him so seriously.

Bill is an awesome guy but he does lose it sometimes and pushes too much and unnecessarily. The important thing is to be able to say come on Bill, let's move on. I used to listen Beck all the time too, but he is a little too weird, out of the blue he attacked "soccer" during World Cup one day. I mean come on...

Beck is crazy :p

Well, Bill's job is to bring in ratings. He's not really reporting news, he's providing commentary. That means sometimes you have to sensationalize it a bit. That said, there are a few people on there that are supposed to report the news that give their opinion too much. I like my news given straight and without the reporter's commentary at the time. I apply this too all news everywhere....

As you can tell I'm usually disappointed.

It's not my favorite story, but still eloquent in it's own right:
Volume 9, Book 89, Number 256 : Narrated by Anas bin Malik
Allah's Apostle said, "You should listen to and obey, your ruler even if he was an Ethiopian (black) slave whose head looks like a raisin."
But for me, the most telling short-discussion is the following:

Volume 6, Book 60, Number 475 : Narrated by Jundub bin Sufyan
Once Allah's Apostle became sick and could not offer his night prayer (Tahajjud) for two or three nights. Then a lady (the wife of Abu Lahab) came and said, "O Muhammad! I think that your Satan has forsaken you, for I have not seen him with you for two or three nights!" On that Allah revealed: 'By the fore-noon, and by the night when it darkens, your Lord (O Muhammad) has neither forsaken you, nor hated you.' (93.1-3)
I wonder why in the life of Muhammad so much resolved around darkness and the moon?? Because in the Bible, Light stands for Truth... Just like the fact that by the spiritual Sun, God is meant...

But of course, I am the one who lies and deceits, for pointing these things out.... Just like Israel and the USA are to blame for all the evil in the Middle east...

If you really want to know the truth, you should look for the truth in meekness and humility.... Because if you don't you will not find the truth... (Because being born into a religion, has no value... Only living truth, with a loving heart, is meaningful to God... NOTHING ELSE)

Please share your favorites.

I think the most interesting story I have heard is the miracle of water flowing from his hands when his people were thirsty and far from water. I'm sure someone can find it in the Hadith somewhere

I know Ibn Ishaq has quite a book on Mohammad's life and stories.

One of the great stories I recall from the life of prophet Muhammad was when the Kaaba was being rebuilt and the tribes and families were fighting over who should place the stone in the building.. Muhammad suggested they place the sstone on a cloth and each tribe take a corner and carry it to the designated place..

From wikipedia:

Muhammad is credited with setting the Black Stone in place in the wall of the Kaaba. A story found in Ibn Ishaq's Sirah Rasul Allah tells how the clans of Mecca renovated the Kaaba following a major fire which had partly destroyed the structure. The Black Stone had been temporarily removed to facilitate the rebuilding work. The clans could not agree on which one of them should have the honour of setting the Black Stone back in its place. They decided to wait for the next man to come through the gate and ask him to make the decision. That individual happened to be the 35-year-old Muhammad, five years before his prophethood. He asked the elders of the clans to bring him a cloth and put the Black Stone in its centre. Each of the clan leaders held the corners of the cloth and carried the Black Stone to the right spot. Then Muhammad himself set the stone in place, satisfying the honour of all of the clans.[15]

Despite the several Seerah classes I've attended, I don't think I'd ever heard that before. Thanks for sharing.

I looked up the hadith.. Narrated 'Abdullah: We used to consider miracles as Allah's Blessings, but you people consider them to be a warning. Once we were with Allah's Apostle on a journey, and we ran short of water. He said, "Bring the water remaining with you." The people brought a utensil containing a little water. He placed his hand in it and said, "Come to the blessed water, and the Blessing is from Allah." I saw the water flowing from among the fingers of Allah's Apostle , and no doubt, we heard the meal glorifying Allah, when it was being eaten (by him).

I wonder what the hadith is classified as in terms of authenticity?

Several posters here have mentioned the story of the African slave. That's the one I heard. I thought it was nice. :)

Most of the stories I heard revolved around the personality of prophet Mohammad. I just find it amazing that there's so much information on him.

Right now I'm reading Mother of Believers, by Kamran Pasha. It's told from the point of view of Aisha, but there's descriptions of prophet Mohammed.

I have always wondered how a pagan ornament all of a sudden becomes somehow related to the God of Abraham. The same with Mecca being a pagan shrine. How did Mohammad know that it was really a building Abraham built?

Through divine revelation..

but W. Montgomery Watt suggests in his "Muhammad: Prophet and Stateman" in the introduction that there was an implicit monotheism around Mecca already.. I'm reading it on my Kindle.

Also consider that Jacob also used a stone as his "beit":

18So Jacob rose early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put under his head and set it up as a pillar and poured oil on its top. 19He called the name of that place Bethel

- Genesis 28:18

but Bethel is far from Mecca. I take it Saudia Arabia wouldn't let someone do a carbon dating sample of the Kaaba.
