1 Kings 19:11-12 Then He said, "Go out, and stand on the mountain before the LORD." And behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake; 12and after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice.
If you want to capture someone's attention
Elijah was hiding out in cave. He'd just been very zealous for the Lord, many were seeking to take his life.
How did the Lord get Elijah's attention?
The Bible says there was a strong wind -
but God wasn't in the wind.
There was an earthquake -
but God wasn't in the earthquake.
There was a fire -
but God wasn't in the fire.
Then there was a still, small voice.
Have you ever had an experience like this? Sometimes we're so focussed or overwhelmed by our problems or circumstances we don't hear the Lord. We are so intent on what we want that we dont hear what He wants. We forget to pause and listen for that still small voice.
Spiritual listening requires stillness, faith and obedience. And real communication requires pauses to let the other party get a word in edgewise. This may be why the Lord in His wisdom has given us *one* mouth and two ears!
John 10:4 ... and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice.
Psalm 46:10 Be still, and know that I am God ...
Psalm 37:7 Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for Him...
Thank You Lord that we know Your voice, that You are our shepherd. Remind each of us that it's easier to hear Your voice when we listen for You in silence. Help each of us rest in the Lord and wait patiently for that still small voice. In the name of Jesus Christ.
