Church statues 'bleed'
May 24, 2004 - 3:52PM

Thousands of believers are looking for their own miracle in a small Brisbane Catholic church where statues have supposedly started bleeding and weeping rose oil tears.

The Vietnamese Community Church, in the south-western suburb of Inala, is the centre of the religious fervour with many attendees believing the apparent phenomena is a sign of hope from God in a world now fraught with uncertainty.

"We need this - we need something positive to believe in with everything that's happening in the world at the moment," said Mike Hill, from the nearby suburb of Gailes, today.

Church spokesman Vincent Do said the abnormalities, which are the first recorded religious phenomena to occur in Australia since a fence post in Sydney's Coogee reportedly took on the image of the Madonna, began more than a week ago when rose oil started flowing from the eyes, nose, forehead and fingers of a statue of the Virgin Mary.

He said on Friday drops of blood began falling from the corner of Mary's robe onto her feet and a small cross of Jesus on the altar also began to bleed.

During the Friday night mass, blood again flowed from the small cross and from Jesus' wounds on a larger crucifix behind the altar, in front of dozens of witnesses.

On Saturday, in front of yet more witnesses, another cross and the statue of a saint also began to bleed.

Mr Do said news of the phenomenon had spread quickly, with people coming from as far as Sydney and Melbourne to witness the sight.

He said Catholic Church authorities had yet to examine the phenomena, but he was sure the evidence would soon be tested.

Most of the affected paraphernalia has now been locked behind glass to protect it for later analysis, while a white table cloth that bears a large rose oil stain has also been folded up out of harms way.

Bill White, of Logan in Brisbane's south, said he had come to the church feeling sceptical but soon changed his mind.

"It's quite an awesome feeling, I've seen things on TV like this before where they had things injected with a slow release - but I can't see anything like that," he said.

Worshippers have brought in dozens of their own statues of the Virgin Mary, Jesus Christ and the saints in the hope the blessings will be passed on.

Ornate flower offerings also decorate the community church, brought by everyday people who believe a miracle has occurred.

Extract from report in today's Courier Mail by Richard Finnila.

"St Mark's now claim there are nine separate pieces exuding rose-scented oil or blood: four crufixes, one statue of Mary, two bloodied tablecloths, a framed picture of Jesus and a set of prayer beads.

But the president of the Queensland Sceptic Association, Bob Bruce, said he needed more evidence before he could be convinced. He said the tears welling from Mary's eyes could easily be faked by rubbing salt into the statue's eyes and saturating it in water and oil.

'Often the white of the eye is the only part of the statue that is left unpainted allowing water to seep up and out' Mr Bruce said. 'Things like this are often done to put bums on seats.' Mr Bruce said when salt is rubbed into a porcelain statue's eyes it attracts water to congregate at that spot and increases the liklelihood of liquid seeping out. He offered to examine the pieces on behalf of The Courier Mail but the church declined.

Speaking for Brisbane's Catholic Archbishop John Bathersby, Father Adrian Farrelly said the church would conduct its own examination within the week.

'The investigation will either determine whether there is an explaniation of a natural order or it will say there doesn't seem to be an explanation for it,' Fr Farrelly said. 'In 31 years as a priest I have never seen anything like it.'

A spokesman for St Mark's, Vincent Do, said he would be happy for church officals to do 'whatever' they wanted to the statues - including cutting them open - to come to a decision. 'People can believe what they want to believe, we are not forcing people to believe,' Mr Do said.

The statues and other religious pieces have been donated by different people over the years and it is unknown exactly how old they are or what they are made of.

St Mark's attendance numbers have been thriving for many years. Each Sunday between 400 & 500 people - mostly Vietnamese migrants - attend the church."

As an Aussie, this is exciting.

The thing is, I hope it's not a fake as it makes us look bad. It is an insult to fake this sort of thing. I hope they haven't faked it. The thing is, if we were given an actual miracle the world could see we wouldn't be subject to this scepticism. Why wn't God or Mary appear to non-believers in droves like over major cities etc?

 A sincere question for you all regarding miracles such as this is why would God choose to show himself in this manner? Why not perform miracles that heal people, or bring food and water to the hungry? This may be one of those "don't question God" questions, but I'm just curious as to the Catholic Church stance on this. I realize that this sounds like a troll, but it is not. I just heard our pastor preach this weekend about "false miracles" possibly being the devil's work, (He was NOT talking about the RCC, however, but WOF-ers) and that we must be on our guard around them. I know one of the statues (is it Our Lady of Fatima?) brought water to a village, but I'm just wondering what bleeding statues could do for belivers. Thanks for your responses to this.

Well CMmom, it is like this. The messages of God are important no matter where and how they come about. I mean, seriously, why would God have appeared as a burning bush? Why would He be located in a mountain? You know what I mean?

God's decision to have these statues cry is nothing short of a message and warning. A statue, or a person crying represents sadness. A cry to change and repent. How He chooses to relay that message is up to Him.

As far as being on guard, the Church must fully investigate these miracles. It does not accept as is the miracles which appear, but appoints clergy to fully check them out.

I will be waiting to hear what they decide on this one. Even as a non-Catholic, I think it would be pretty cool if it was found to be legit. Especially if it brings people to Christ, or helps/heals in some other fashion.
Thanks!

I am worried that it may be a warning for Brisbane people to be careful about a terrorist attack or something. It's a gorgeous place I am moving there maybe soon and the city is full of people. I Pray God protects Brisbane and all of Australia and the World against such attacks.

Well...we had a similiar occurance in Lakeridge, VA in 1992. My wife and her whole family witnessed the statues crying and blood and tears.

The Church investigated but never approved or disapproved them...it seemed to be because their wasn't a clear message accompanying the miracles.

Well, it turns out that at that same time, the Ebola virus was in a lab in Reston, Va, which is about 30 min away from Lakeridge, VA.

Perhaps it was a warning about the virus threat, since the statues bled from their eyes and the virus makes people bleed from their eyes.

Maybe it just 'rewards' believers for their belief in God, thanking them for their belief in God.

Whilst many people ask for miracles, some things just happen that cannot be answered and sometimes don't make sense. Someone survivng an earthquake, a terrorist attack, etc is a 'miracle' because it is compared to the situation in whioch it occurs, same goes for people cured of incurable diseases, or against the odds.

How many people will turn towards the Lord because of this one incident? Maybe there is one person that this incident it specifically for, a local priest, a parishoner, or someone who passes that church each day. Yet Jesus wasn't here for 1 person, but for everyone.

In times of trouble we all look towards the Lord, and sometimes he seems to answer before we ask.
