  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

As a lover of ST and SW, I never compare then because they are two different types of scifis. SW, as originally stated by Lucas, is more of a space opera. Its about more laid back. Where as ST is more of an in depth series about society, differing views and examination. In other words Trek is more about talking and thought, Wars is more about tales, stories, sagas...etc.

---edit---
Also Trek is more based in reality then Wars is. Wars throws logic and realism out the windows and makes things more fun. Trek tries to loosely base things on a more scientific and moral ground.

Oh Disney Star Wars..

At first I was on board with only minor complaints, but the more commentary I hear about it the more I see how bad the most recent movies have been. If you're a casual fan I can see if you enjoy them as a popcorn flick, but they basically ruin the story arcs of the original characters from a storytelling perspective. Han has now become a deadbeat dad after learning to become more selfless throughout the original trilogy. Luke has gone from a hopeful, positive jedi to a grumpy old man who abandons his friends and lives alone on an island. Rey is a mary sue character that can succeed at anything she tries, and she ultimately trains herself in the force instead of relying on men. And apparently you can now hyperspace jump into enemy ships, despite no one ever thinking to do that before.

If you dig into the production backstory of Kathleen Kennedy and this new story group, all of these new movies have been in service of promoting feminism and identity politics above all, and they mention that multiple times in interviews. They never really had a cohesive script for all three movies to begin with, which was made even more apparent when Rian Johnson tossed out notes from JJ Abrams and did his own thing for The Last Jedi. Mark Hamill has even shown his disdain on numerous occasions for the latest portrayal of Luke. I have no faith that this newest movie can redeem the dumpster fire that Kathleen Kennedy has set and probably won't be watching.

If you want a good example of how out of touch she is with actually telling a good story, you only need to see that she gave Rian Johnson a new trilogy to be in charge of after this one has ended. Not only did his movie turn a lot of fans away in disgust at ruining a beloved character in Luke, but it partially caused the complete failure of Solo when it came out a few months later. That she doesn't realize this and fire him from any upcoming projects really blows my mind.

I liked it, too. I think that's been my favorite Star Wars movie so far.

Yeah, probably the best that's not part of the original trilogy of films. Thing is, I think the story should have ended after Return Of The Jedi, but if it's going to be a fun little popcorn film I'm alright with that.

Mark Hamill gives a great performance, at least compared to his cheesy performance in the first three films. A shame really, American Graffiti seemed to show that George Lucas could develop characters with depth and interesting performances but it seems that since then he can't help but make almost every actor appear wooden.

Last Jedi was Disney’s Gospel of Mark. Designed to flout every expectation and infuriate the hard core fans. Cool as a philosophical test tube but it’s time for the crowd pleasers to cleanup the mess and bring the fun back. JJ is Luke the evangelist, obviously.
