The saying “Preach the Gospel always, if necessary use words” is attributed to St. Francis of Assisi, and it certainly fits his theology and ministry. But did he actually make, or write, this statement? Much has been written ABOUT St. Francis, but very little is actually written BY him.
The closest we’ve been able to find is in his written Rule of 1212, “Let all the brothers, however, preach by their deeds.” For praising God is an act of acknowledgment of who God is."
