I don't think the Taverna needs slaying anymore. That's why I said it was like having the original back - threads used to be able to go on forever. The original Taverna (well, the original as re-started after the Great Crash) was several thousand posts.

It is COLD here today. And I have nothing to do. But that's ok

Vespers tonight YAYYYY And we get to help prepare a dinner tomorrow night. Cooking Greek food, YES!

Today was the hottest it has been all year.

I think we may have gone as high as 75F! :o

It was exhausting, 75F and sun!



We haven't seen the sun in days! It took me a week and a half to find my sunglasses from last year and I lost them again! But they were recovered in only a forty-five minute search.

It was close to 100 degrees here.

My brain felt like it was fried.

If I read one more post that implies that cradle Orthodox "don't really understand" Orthodoxy, I am going to puke all over this forum. (Well, okay, so it will only be on MY monitor and it won't even affect your reality...nonetheless....)

I understand that many here are converts who have read and read and read...This is WONDERFUL and I am so happy to see you in the Church.
At the same time, for a cradle like me, who really DOES know the Faith and the Church, it begins to feel like converts don't really like us all that much. It begins to feel like you see us and treat us, the same way as the evangelical protestants who come to our homelands to convert us because we're "not really Christian" or we're just "cultural Christians" who haven't "accepted Jayzuz Chriiiiiiiiiist as our pursonel Lawrd and Sayvier".

It is really insulting and hurtful to us cradles to hear you say things like that. I have heard this from converts in my church, and I have read similar statements here in this forum. I think you mean well, but you are hurting us deeply - cutting us to the very bone of our being when you imply that we don't know as much as you. We may not have read the same books - but this is our Church too. We have bled for it, and some of us have family who have died for it.


When I read things on here that is not Orthodox, I am always afraid to say anything because I don't want to offend, I don't want to turn people away, or cause an argument. I hesitate all the time and I feel like I am walking around on egg-shells.

I admire you converts for your zeal, your knowledge and your "journey home". But pleaase: wipe your dirty feet before you come in the door and if you take a shower, please hang the shower curtain INSIDE the tub. Thanks.

It goes both ways I think. There are some cradles who have really no idea (as in, what do you mean I should go to confession, I never have, or telling them that their picked patron saint is not a saint in the church when they clearly are etc, etc) and it's not always their fault, their priest might need to give them a hint. But many cradles know how to live the faith, they have a clue what to cook during Lent (I envy all the simple but delish dishes our cradles whip together) and you rarely see any 'wayyyy out there' behavior.
I'm not saying there aren't converts out there like that but it takes a while (those who have eaten the same thing over and over during Lent, raise their hand! ). I think one of the problems originate with the priests. When someone is interested they give them a list/stack of books to read. Instead I think they should tell them to lay off the reading and expect them to be in church as often as humanly possible. Then after the worship and church year is a bit more familiar, pick up some books. Me for example got a whole lot more out of Met. Kallistos (Timothy Ware) books after I had attended church for a bit, I thought they were dry as dirt before that.
Many of the books people end up reading are published to be mainly used in seminary where there is a constant discussion and guidance going on. Or at the least with the guidance of ones priest, not alone where one makes up their own minds. Reading about lives of saints and lives of great Orthodox rather than the intricates of theology and what not would probably be much more beneficial.
Some cradles also carry the protestant bible thumping mindset that everything has to be backed up with writings. For me this is a scary area since so much in our church is mysteries. They might have left most of the baggage behind but it takes a long time to stop comparing and contrasting.
I have a slight feeling that on the last judgement seat they won't look at how many pages you read, but rather if you lived a life in the best possible way to serve Christ, went to church to your best ability, did your 'work' and so..
So as you are offended by some that the converts say, it goes both ways. People who are cradles AND know their faith are treasures to converts. And just like cradles who don't know their thing can give converts false info, converts can drive cradles up the wall with their constant talk about 'facts' and know it all attitudes. There's a name for that 'convertitis' and for some it goes away, for some it gets WORSE. I'd be bold and say that it's more likely for a convert to go off the deep (fundamentalistic) end than for a cradle (although I've seen that happen too, and it was UGLEEEE).
So it goes both ways... and next time you see us talking about food during Lent, give us some good cradle recipes to use. We need them, or we'll be eating beans for 40 days...

Every time we have any type of beans my dear husband makes this high pitch, frog like: Beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaans! Followed by the noise of the consequences of eating beans...

I did notice this past lent (and plenty of beans which we do love) that they make me lose weight. Just as a side note... all that fiber and protein.

Home from Vespers. Yay

Thinking about going to bed sometime soon. Not sure yet.

I love Vespers. Especially since at the parish I attend Vespers at (I attend two parishes (at least) in any given weekend, confusing but normal) it's all in English so I get to understand even the changeable hymns. Everywhere else (and all other services, more or less) it's done in whatever other language with a bit of english interspersed.

*hums* ...now that we have come to the setting of the sun and seen the evening light...

Noodles for dinner and off to bed early, soon. I have to be at Church early tomorrow, ugh.
