What does Speaking in Tongues mean?   What is it? From what I've heard it almost sounds demonic! I'm hoping I'm wrong!!!

Hi Krazeekkc

I hope this will help you with your questions.

First look at Acts Chapter 2, the whole chapter.

Next look at 1 Corinthians 12:9-11, 12:28-13:3

Now look at 1 Corinthians Chapter 14

Basically put, no speaking in tongues is not demonic. It is a gift from God, through the spirit. I hope this will help you some. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me.

Mav.

Speaking in tongues is one of the gifts of God given to His Church. People had a tendency to go overboard with it in the early Church, causing disorder, and Paul taught how it was to be done in Church and as a private way of praying when words are not enough to express the burden on one's heart.

Romans 8:26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

I actually belong to a church that does not speak in tongues. But I pray in tongues. God's thoughts are so much higher than our own, and this is the only way I can get my little mind thoughts out of the way for a true prayer. It is so extremely powerful, sometimes it makes you laugh, or cry, but usually you just feel this extremely powerful, loving presence within you. It is the spirit praying.

Here are some links where you can hear speaking in tongues.

http://home1.gte.net/evande/skeptic/tvevan.htm

Kenneth Copeland "pretending" to speak in tongues but calls someone forward to "take the mark of the beast" .. Well, that is what the website said....

If this doesn't raise the hairs on the back of your head, I don't know what will.

I couldn't find a real long version of speaking in tongues.

While tongues may be Biblical, I think it is overused in church. Holy laughter, on the other hand, doesn't sound like something from God. I wouldn't want God to make me do that stuff....

On the one had they are hilarious but on the other they are so damaging because the mainstream population is snowed by these folks and think this is what Christianity is. The sad reality as well is that many, many suckers actually follow these heretics. I'd love to hear some of the vineyard stuff, moooooing, barking, etc. got any of that?

Practically the entire chapter 14 of 1 Corinthian letter was Paul setting guidelines for the use of tongues in Church, as it was a problem back then as there are problems today. There will always be a crowd on either side of the fence - one mocking with ridicule and then the other extreme seeking attention in any way possible. Standing in the middle, between to two extremes, is the truth, as usual.

Let me add that there are two gifts of tongues. When talking about tongues in a church setting, there should be an interpretation, as if there isn't one, no one is edified. But when using it as a prayer language, there is no interpretation, and it is used to edify yourself.
