  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I need help. I would like to understand this subject more than i currently do... I know what is said in 1 Corinthians 14 about Gifts of Prophecy and Tongues, and Orderly Worship but maybe you could help me interpret it further...

"If anyone speaks in a tongue, two-- or at the most three-- should speak, one at a time, and someone must interpret." 1 Corinthinians 14:27 (NIV)

Hence... would it be wrong for people to speak aloud in tongues without an interpret especially when there are possible unbelievers present?

And also I was told by someone that the gift of tongues comes with the holy spirit and everyone who has the holy spirit must have the ability to speak in tongues...????

I need help to back up the truth of Christ... Please pray for me and possibly give me advice...
 Please voice your opinion.

God Bless, YSIC Natalie.

The Corinthians had a problem with people prophesying and speaking in tongues; they would all speak at once as a confusing mass. It wasn't edifying for the body of the church or helpful to unbelievers since no one could understand his brother. Paul calls for only one person to speak at a time, and with an interpreter, so that that person may be heard and understood by everyone else, and that they may learn from it.

In 1 Cor 14:22-25 Paul says tongues are for unbelievers, as a sign of God's power, and that an interpreter is necessary for unbelievers to understand, rather than thinking Christians are nuts.

I encourage you to read through 1 Cor 14 with the aid of a commentary so you may better understand; I'm sorry I can't help more.

The use of the word "tongues" in the bible actualy means languages. Not all gifts come when the Holy Spirit comes upon us, some receave the gift of tongues and some don't.

Acts 2 1 When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord* in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

5 And there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men, from every nation under heaven. 6 And when this sound occurred, the multitude came together, and were confused, because everyone heard them speak in his own language. 7 Then they were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another, "Look, are not all these who speak Galileans? 8 And how is it that we hear, each in our own language in which we were born? 9 Parthians and Medes and Elamites, those dwelling in Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya adjoining Cyrene, visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11 Cretans and Arabs--we hear them speaking in our own tongues the wonderful works of God." 12 So they were all amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, "Whatever could this mean?" 13 Others mocking said, "They are full of new wine."

1 Corinthians 13 1 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal.

1 Corinthians 14 1 Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy. 2 For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries. 3 But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men. 4 He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church. 5 I wish you all spoke with tongues, but even more that you prophesied; for F43 he who prophesies is greater than he who speaks with tongues, unless indeed he interprets, that the church may receive edification.

6 But now, brethren, if I come to you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you unless I speak to you either by revelation, by knowledge, by prophesying, or by teaching? 7 Even things without life, whether flute or harp, when they make a sound, unless they make a distinction in the sounds, how will it be known what is piped or played? 8 For if the trumpet makes an uncertain sound, who will prepare himself for battle? 9 So likewise you, unless you utter by the tongue words easy to understand, how will it be known what is spoken? For you will be speaking into the air. 10 There are, it may be, so many kinds of languages in the world, and none of them is without significance. 11 Therefore, if I do not know the meaning of the language, I shall be a foreigner to him who speaks, and he who speaks will be a foreigner to me.

Well, growing up in church, I only heard about one kind of baptism. After I had joined a new church, I learned that there are more baptisms. The baptism of water is John's baptism, it is for repentence. The baptism of the Holy Spirit is the baptism of God (Jesus), where God's spirit annoints with power.

Acts 8:15-17 - 15When they arrived, they prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit, 16because the Holy Spirit had not yet come upon any of them; they had simply been baptized into[a] the name of the Lord Jesus. 17Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.

When we are born again, and christ becomes one with us. When Jesus said that He would send a comforter in His place, He was talking about the Spirit of Truth, the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit enables a believer to fulfill God's work on this earth effectively, equiping us with the power from above.

Acts 1:8 - 8But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

The gift of tongues is available to all who want it, also we are all to prophesy aswell. There is a ladder of what comes first (not more important) in the church. The first seems to be more rare and the last ones seems to be for everyone (if the Holy Spirit so chooses).
1 Cor 12:28 - 28And in the church God has appointed first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, also those having gifts of healing, those able to help others, those with gifts of administration, and those speaking in different kinds of tongues.
