  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

This drive me crazy, that people believe that there's more violence. Because people stopped spanking. Everyone I know spank there kids. Except a few people on the internet and I don't plan on spanking. So why do people believe spanking went away?

I agree. There wasn't less violence "back then." I think society made less of a big deal about it. But there was not less of it.

If anything, people were able to cope with it better, because they had stronger family units. There are far fewer cohesive family units today.

Research does show that families who do not spank tend to be more educated, and their kids better adjusted in society. I think the mistake a lot of people make is comparing "spanking families" with those who exert no discipline at all... who basically neglect their kids. Well that is not a good comparison. Parents who take an active interest in their kids and bother talk to them about right and wrong, instead of just whacking them, tend to produce fine kids.

The facts seem to determine your argument to be entirely invalid. Violent crime rate has been trending down for a long time.

The reason it seems to happen more often is we now have a 24 hour news cycle including several news networks that are on for 24 hours. There isn't enough national news to cover for 24 hours. Therefore they have to find something to cover. Violent crimes are an easy fill in.

+1

Violent crimes are much more closely linked to poverty and a lack of parental involvement then it is linked to the decision to spank or not.

Deciding not to spank also does not mean that there is no discipline in a family. A child can be rightly disciplined with grounding, extra work or chores, and undesired exercise to name just a few things.

I don't think spanking is necessarily "evil" or anything like that, but there are other ways, good ways to discipline a child. It perhaps requires more creativity then spanking but it's not like children enjoy doing chores for example.

I have seen this too. Those who correlate no spanking to not disciplining in any way.No spanking = spoiled unruly brats.Who grow up to become societies problem.

Sure some parents do not discipline at all or enough that's a separate issue.Spanking from what I have read is actually the most ill effective way to discipline.A quick fix. That in the longer term does little good and can even have negative results in the future.Someone who uses spanking as a routine way of disciplining rather than alternatives are more likely to have an unruly child,or an anxious child,or a child more prone to violence themselves.

Regardless of that debate, someone saying I do not spank my children is not saying I do not discipline my children.
