  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

How many of you remember what you were doing or where you were at when the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded in 1986?

I was in Orchestra class in Junior High. The news was broadcast over the PA in school. We ran outside and could see the trail of smoke in the sky. I was living in South Florida at the time.

I was actually quite amazed that we could see the smoke trail from so far away. Then I remember going home and watching the news reports of it for days.

I was in Junior High in Ms. Remesnik's class, I think it was Home Ec or something like that. She came in and she was crying and she told us what happened. Then she pulled out the television and turned it on so we watched the coverage. The teachers were very upset that day. Later that day, I found out that my mother called the school to tell them what happened.

I didn't really grasp the importance at the time.

After lunch, we watched the launch on TV in my science class. It was extremely shocking because noone expected it to blow up. My teacher was in shock and really didn't say much of anything until the period was over.

My DH said he skipped school with some friends to watch the launch at home.

I was a freshman in high school. Some friends and I were eating lunch when we heard an annoucement over the PA system. It was loud in the lunch room so we couldn't understand what was said. A few minutes later another friend came in and told us that they had just announced that the Challenger had blown up. I remember we told her that she must have misunderstood because shuttles just didn't blow up. After lunch we found out she was right and we watched the news coverage on TV.

I was at band practice. I didn't hear anything about it then, but after that was US History, and there was a TV set up and we watched coverage on TV.

My last period was calculus and we tried to use it as an excuse to get out of class that day, but our teacher said we needed to honor the advances of science and math by pressing onward in spite of the terrible news.

I was in 6th grade. I played sick that day so I could stay home and watch the launch on TV.

It was horrific to watch it as it happened. I don't think I'll ever forget the way the camera covered the explosion plume, and followed the pieces of debris :(

I spent the whole day glued to the TV with my mom.

I was living in Central Florida then. I was outside watching it, but I didn't quite know what was going on! Not until my neighbour, Brenda came out and told me did I realize what it was all about!

I was sick that day, and watching the launch on TV. It was so sad to see what happened to the Challenger and its crew.

I used to be a big Space Shuttle geek. Along with various models and posters, I even had a Shuttle operator's manual.

I was in 6th grade science class in Naples, FL. My science teacher, Mrs. Manning, was one of the teachers being considered for the flight. If I remember correclty, she was third in line behind Christa McAuliffe.

I remember how excited she was to watch the shuttle...she made us all be very quiet. I will never forget the look on her face when the shuttle exploded. She ran out of class in tears...we had a substitute for the rest of the hour.
