soul sleep is a bad term. it implies that there is a thing inside of you that sleeps when you die. it is misleading. I would say that it is dust to dust. this is both scientifically and theologically inaccurate. There is no soul you are a soul. you do not have one.

The Bible supports the view that when God made man and breathed into his nostrils that man became a living soul.

In some translations it says the man became a living being.

We are a living soul and without breath that living soul becomes a dead soul.

Which in turn becomes dust until the Second Coming, where the righteous are resurrected and go to heaven and then the rest of the dead are raised at the end of the 1,000 years to get their reward, eternal death along with the devil and his angels.

I will come back with Scripture but just now I have to be off.

Ecclesiastes 9:5 always come to mind for starters.

"For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more reward, for the memory of them is forgotten."

Over and over again the Bible talks about death as a sleep. Otherwise, why would we need to be resurrected at the Second Coming? It's the most logical explanation.

[FONT=Times New Roman, times]By what figure does the Bible represent death?
"But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope." 1 Thess. 4:13 (1 Cor. 15:18, 20) (John 11:11-14).

[FONT=Times New Roman, times]What part, if any, do they take in earthly things?
"Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion forever in anything that is done under the sun." Ecc. 9:6.
[/FONT][FONT=Times New Roman, times]NOTE. - If one continued in consciousness after death, he would know of the promotion or dishonor of his sons. But Job says he does not know this, then if, as stated in the last text quoted, in death one loses all the attributes of his mind, as love, hatred, envy, etc., it is plain that his thoughts have perished, and that he can have nothing more to do with living objects. Again if man in death prolongs his powers of thought, he lives; and if he lives he must be somewhere. Where is he? Is he in heaven, or in hell? If in either place immediately after death, what is the necessity of a judgment in the end of the world to decide his case? Is there a possibility that some have at death gone to the wrong place, and must needs be sent to the other, after having been in bliss or torment for ages, perhaps?[/FONT]

"For David is not ascended into the heavens." Acts 2:34.
[/FONT]
[FONT=Times New Roman, times]If the dead cannot praise God, what must take place to enable them to do so?
"Thy dead men shall live, together with my dead body shall they arise. Awake and sing, ye that dwell in dust; for thy dew is as the dew of herbs, and the earth shall cast out the dead." Isa. 26:19.
[/FONT]
[FONT=Times New Roman, times]What was the only thing with which David would be satisfied?
"As for me, I will behold Thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with Thy likeness." Ps. 17:15.
[/FONT]
[FONT=Times New Roman, times]If there should never be an awakening of the dead, what would be the result?
"For if the dead rise not, then is not Christ raised; and if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins. Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished." 1Cor. 15:16-18.
[/FONT]
[FONT=Times New Roman, times]When does the resurrection of the righteous take place?
"For the Lord Himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God; and the dead in Christ shall rise first." 1 Thess. 4:16 (1 Cor. 15:23).
[/FONT][FONT=Times New Roman, times]NOTE. - If, as we have learned (Eccl. 9:5), the dead know not anything, then they will certainly have no knowledge of the lapse of time. A thousand years will be to them a day or a moment. To go down to the grave, and wait till the resurrection, even though it be a thousand years, will be to those who experience it like a sudden transition from this life to the next. It ought to be a consoling thought to one whose life has been filled with anxiety and grief for loved ones who persist in wickedness, to know that they will in death be spared torment. Again, it would mar the felicity of one's enjoyment in heaven if he could look upon earth, and see his friends and relatives maltreated by strangers, or suffering from cold and hunger. It is wise that God has ordered it as expressed by the patriarch: "His sons come to honor, and he knoweth it not; and they are brought low, but he perceiveth it not of them." Job 14:21.[/FONT]

[FONT=Times New Roman, times]I hope this helps

I think the soul sleep thing is a valid perspective of what happens. When all else fails the best thing to do is to read what the Lord Jesus Christ says about death. In John 11:11 He called death a sleep when He was referring to Lazarus. The Bible calls death a sleep in about a hundred different texts through out the Bible. I think the Lord called our death sleep was because He was fully aware of the real death that awaits the wicked one day. In other words He wanted to make a clear distinction between the two deaths by calling what happens in the first death a sleep. That death is a final annihilation of the soul and the body. This is the death He was speaking of in John 3:16 and Paul in Romans 6:23.

The soul is not annihilated in the first death, Jesus says that a time is coming that ALL who are in their graves will hear His voice and come forth some to everlasting life and some to everlasting contempt. The soul which is a man or woman or child will sleep and not know anything until the life giver wakes it up at the resurrection. Praise God!!!

What happens you die? Good question. The answer is simple,

You cease to exist- this is what happens when you die

Lets go through the process of what happens when you die:

1) You die
2) Your body becomes lifeless, and returns to the earth from which it came from
3) Your “spirit”/”mind”/whatever else you call it ceases to exist and goes no where.

THAT, my friends, is what happens when you die. Things that do not happen:

1) You are not transported to heaven/hell/purgatory, in mind or body form
2) You are not reincarnated.

Let us now look at the bible and see if what I say is true or not.

So, if we were alive in heaven, hell or purgatory (or reincarnated for that matter) we would have knowledge, awareness. We would have feelings, etc, no? Especially if you’re “burning in hell”. I mean, despite the fact that the idea of a everlasting torturous hell is not true (if you want more info on that just ask) even if it were true it in fact couldn’t work because the bible says the dead do not know anything.

[bible]Ecclesiastes 9:5-10[/bible]

I mean, if we were in heaven, would we not praise God? Yet, this verse says so otherwise,

[bible]Psalm 115:17[/bible]

The dead don’t praise God. Why? Because, quite simply, they are not aware of anything. Why? They are in a deep sleep- that is the best explanation. You don’t know anything when you’re dead- you just lie there. Not existing. You’re gone. You lie down, until you are later raised when Jesus comes again,

[bible]Job 14:12[/bible]

To further prove this is in reference to Jesus returning, check out this next verse,

[bible]2 Peter 3:10[/bible]

See the verse below. THAT is when we gain eternal life! When God comes.

[bible]1 Corinthians 15:51-52[/bible]

[bible]1 Thessalonians 4:16-17[/bible]

Besides, wouldn’t King David be in heaven today by this logic of going to heaven straight after you die? After all, he was good

The bible makes it clear. King David is not in heaven!

[bible]Acts 2:29-34[/bible]

Let us take note. This verse came from the New Testament. After Jesus had come.

For those who say that we gained immorality after Jesus came and died- Jesus here had died, and David was still dead!

So let us recap:

> The dead know nothing
> The dead are raised again when Jesus comes
> When you die, you just cease to exist
> King David himself is dead!!!

And remember, this was all shown through scriptual evidence.

But wait- maybe my body is dead, you may say- but what about my soul? Doesn’t that keep on living?

It doesn’t. This is not scriptural. The soul isn’t some life force. A soul is a human being in most cases in the bible- and, occasionally, it is referring to something else, but it never says there is anything separate- some living force that keeps on living inside of you even when your body dies. The soul generally means a human being.

[bible]Genesis 2:7[/bible]

So, lets look at this. A soul was made. So, lets look at how a soul was made.

1) God formed a body- a vessel- from the dust
2) God breathed into the body to give it the breath of life
3) Boom. These two things combined to make a living soul.

So lets see. The way the soul is formed is from two things- it is a body + breath. If there had just been breath breathed into thin air, a soul would not have been formed. If a body had just been formed, a soul would not exist. No, a soul is body + breath. Ie, a soul is a living human being. Humans are souls.

So, a soul is,

 A living, breathing human being

A soul is not

> Your conscience
> Your mind
> Some spirit that lives inside of you

A soul is a human being.

So, if you take one of these things away, a soul dies. “Spirit” is often times used in reference to breath, or the life, inside of you. So, in this verse, we can see what happens to the soul when the body loses its spirit-ie, life force.

[bible]James 2:26[/bible]

So the body is dead. See? These two need each other to live. Since a soul is a combination of both, you take away one, you kill the other.

So when you die, your soul doesn’t go anywhere, because your soul is killed. Here is what happens to your soul at death:

[bible]Ecclesiastes 12:7[/bible]

The spirit is breath, and that returns to God, while the body fades away.

Besides- if the spirit were a life force, your mind or something, then this verse would make no sense,

[bible]Ecclesiastes 9:5-10[/bible]

Remember, we know nothing.

Souls die. We are sinners, are we not?

[bible]Ezekiel 18:20[/bible]

We are sinners- and the soul that sin shall die. Pretty clear, no?

So yes. AGAIN, let us recap what has been proven from the bible:

> The dead know nothing
> The dead are raised again when Jesus comes
> When you die, you just cease to exist
> King David himself is dead!!!
> A soul requires a body and spirit/breath to live
> Souls do not go to heaven and await resurrection of the body. They die.

Hope this has been of service to you

The false teaching of the immortal soul is the biggest lie the enemy of our souls has ever given to the world. It plays right into the desirous nature of mankind to want to live forever. Many will twist whatever truth they need to twist to make themselves feel they can believe in this lie. This lie is at the foundation of all spiritualism and was brougth over into the christian church thru paganism.
