• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Now that you all are back:

I found this:

From a feminist perspective the coming documentary:

http://thetruthaboutsex.org/index.html

A documentary on male/female relationships. By Marilyn Meeker.

It will cover many topics, including pornography, sex clubs and prostitution of interest to sex workers.

I read the cast and one of the persons that will be doing voices overs is Cleopatra Cameron. I suspect she might be former porn actress Aspen Brock. She was a former incest survivor, stripper and heroin addict who was the wife or well know porn actor Buck Adams and the girfriend of ultra mysoginist porn director Mark W Handel. She worked for 4 year in porn oftem in the harder and most mysogynist part of the industry. She quit porn and heroine in 2003. And was profiled in A Current Affair with Anne Bissell. They were working together and Ms Cameron was reunited with her child, had remarried and was going to school.

Emmanuelle Garcia Schick Interview:

Exclusive interview with filmmaker Emmanuelle Schick (La Petite Morte) By Renata Lorenc and Mai Meksawan IFQ talks with Emmanuelle Schick Garcia about her acclaimed documentary film, La Petite Morte, and her views on pornography. This debut feature from a French/Canadian director explores the shocking truth inside the pornography industry in France, focusing on the actress Raffa‘la Anderson (who starred in the controversial film Baise-Moi and also wrote the best-selling book Hard). In the film, Raffa‘la talks openly about how she entered the porn industry as a teenage virgin, and the various sexual abuses she endured prior and whilst working as a porn actress. La Petite Morte (Ç little death È) opened to a rave review at the July 2003's New York International Independent Film and Video Festival in Las Vegas. American audiences can catch the screenings of the film again at the next editions of the NYIIFVF later this year in Los Angeles (September 2003) and New York (November 2003). For more information, go to www.nyfilmvideo.com and www.lapetitemorte.com.
How did you do the research for the subject of the film?
I did research for about seven months. Most of my research consisted of meeting people, reading everything I could find on the subject, watching films, etc. I didn't focus solely on pornography, however, but included incest, child molestation and sexual deviance. I needed to understand what void pornography filled in people's lives, especially those involved in making these types of films.
Were you familiar with the porn industry in France prior to making the film?
Not at all.
Has there been any pressure from the people in the industry not to reveal too much about certain inside informations? Are there things that you had to leave off, voluntarily or not, of the film's final cut?
I haven't felt any pressure, but I'm sure it exists for people currently working in the industry. It's an image game, just like politics. There are very heart breaking and horrible things about the pornographic world. But, most of those things happened to actresses and actors long before they arrived in the pornography world. The pornography industry is just a place where a lot of victims relive their abuse, where they can continue to destroy themselves like their abusers destroyed them. That's what is the most disturbing to me. The incest, rapes, child abuse and neglect that become the springboard for a lot of participants to enter the industry. People in the industry will tell you this isn't true, but I learned everything to the contrary. This excuse makes it easier to go to work, that's all. There are a lot of things that were told to me in confidentiality that aren't in my film.
Why choosing to focus on Raffa‘la Anderson as the subject matter?
Because she's extremely honest and sincere. She's someone I have a lot of respect and admiration for, someone who's taught me a great deal.
After the controversies that surround the film Baise-Moi and Raffa‘la's book, are you afraid that she might run a risk of getting overexposure a bit?
Not at all. The book and film came out a few years ago. Raffa‘la's a very private person that you don't hear much about. I don't think it will ever be a problem with her.
What is your opinion regarding the recent harsh criticisms - some might say backlash - regarding the film and book mentioned above?
Raffa‘la's book was very well received in France. It came out in seven other countries to positive reviews and sales. I liked it. As for Baise-Moi, I have problems with it on a technical level. But the power of the film is extraordinary. It's a powerful story, the acting is good and the visceral effect of the film is very strong. It's something that a lot of filmmakers have a hard time capturing, but I think [filmmakers] Virginie [Despentes] and Coralie did a great job in that respects. When I saw the film, half the audience left during the rape scene, similar to the effect the film Irreversible had this year. I'm glad people were offended by those scenes. Because if you think watching those scenes was bad, imagine what a real rape is like. Imagine if all those people who talked, argued and were offended about the film focused all that energy and time on real rape crimes. That's what offends me, why aren't we getting mad about that?
Do you think that being a woman gives you an advantage of approaching the subject, given the way women are heavily exploited in the porn industry?
I don't know.
What do you think the term "feminism" really mean nowadays?
Everything and nothing. There's a lot of histories attached to the word. It's evolved and become different things over the years, which to me is natural. Because women have always been complex, and the evolution of feminism is a testament to that. I would really like to see more women in politics, maybe that makes me a feminist, I don't know.
What kind of reaction do you hope to get from audiences in the United States - a deeply conservative and puritanical country (albeit one with a huge porn industry)?
Since the film is more about Raffa‘la than pornography, I hope people see something they weren't expecting. I hope they have the same reaction I had, to be forever changed and affected by Raffa‘la's story.
Being born in France and growing up in Canada, did you notice something inherently different in the way people in the two continents - Europe and North America - percieve the subjects of sex, pornography, feminism, rape and incest?
Absolutely. Raffa‘la and I discussed the sex education we had, within our families and schools. The two could not have been more different. In Canada, I learned about inapproriate touching, respect, etc. when I was about 7 (at school). Raffa‘la never learned about any of that, only about how the reproductive systems worked. In the US and Canada there are sexual harassment laws, in France that doesn't exist. I've been living in Paris for the past six months and I'm very disappointed. I've been harassed, yelled at, aggressed, more than any other city I've lived in. That's a huge reflection on the eduction system, laws and attitudes of a country.
Do you think that pornography can be considered healthy for a couple's sex life?
Sure. But, I think people need to start using their imaginations more. With all the pornography I've watched, I perfer my fantasies a hundred times more.
What about the argument that pornography could help prevent rape since it serves as an outlet for lonely people?
That's a very lame excuse used by idiots. Rapists don't rape because they're lonely. Rape is violence.

The film La Petit Morte can be downloaded here:

http://www.japanesepopsongs.com/films.html

It was some nudity and sex (course they have to take some footage on porn sets) but is often implied. The convination of sadness and sillyness in the backstage of french porn sets was well captured.

I downloaded the film from that site for free and it had subtitles in English. Remember that is a Canadian Film.

Now is for sale or rent but I'm sure they have subtitles, email the site for questions. Maybe you can even talk to Emmanuelle Garcia.

This has nothing to do with the current conversation.... I just have two words for you all.

SARAH PALIN!

I'd never heard of the woman before so I was in SHOCK when I heard the news on the radio as I drove into town today.

I said out loud "A WOMAN IS GOING TO BE THE VICE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. OH MY GOD."

And then my eyes started to tear up and I had to pull over.

What a day for women.

I just want to congratulate my American friends. I am so proud.

If they get elected! I honestly know nothing about her at this point, but I am impressed that a WOMAN who was in Vogue and has competed in beauty competitions is being taken seriously enough to run for Vice President! Never mind what I think of who she's running with or against! I am just in AWE that she has gotten as far as she has!

Great article.

I wonder indeed, how in the world are we going to be able to show the world the damage that is being done in the name of free speech?

Isn't it illegal to yell FIRE in a crowded theatre? There must be an equivalent of that to human beings in the sex trade!

I have studied the matter and I do not think that the problem relies in censorship.

As long as the religious right keeps taking of censorship they will loose the battle against pornographers. Modern society is allergic to censorhsip.

The real problem lies IN PAYING PEOPLE TO HAVE SEX.

Ban paying men (and some women) to pay for sex and you will drive 90% of all porn out of the market. And long as there are people willing to pay for sex there will be porn.
Yes, some exhibicionists will still do porn movies on a voluntary basis becasue tey like it and for a voyeur audience that might like it too. That is a issue between them and God.
But if you classify paying for sex as prostitution and ban paying for sex in the Swedish model. Most porn and street prostitution will go away. There will still be some escort agencies, but there will be more discreet. And there will be some cam girl porn and features porn, done with friends but not too much.
The trick is getting the commercial aspect out of sex. Go after the demand of commercial sex not against the offer of comercial sex.

Same for strip clubs, nude dancing as a performance is in my opinion free speech but table dances and worse private dances are were strippers get most of the PTSD.

I believe making the links between PTSD and sex work more known in also a key point.

The "feminist" Democrats and the sex industry. Clinton the porno president.
(I found this exchange interesting, cannot say were I got it)

Is true; Janet Reno tought that she was the one makings the laws not Congress and stoppend enfocing federals laws regarding interstate sale of pornography and interstate transporting of women for sexual explotation purposes.
Maybe a pay of to the donors to the Dems in the pornography world.

Well, things might be on the move for me now.

This week I emailed some high up ladies at the Catholic Women's League and they asked permission to send my email to even higher ups. I basically volunteered myself as a spokesperson for the cause, identifying myself as one with some experience in the sex industry. My local president was incredibly sweet to me after I emailed her about my past. She told me she has elevated me to Mary Magdalene status. I know I will have her on my side. She's also my RCIA sponsor. God is good eh?

I'm joining Toastmasters this week- a public speaking club to polish up my skills. I've done some PS in the past - won a contest in high school and was the media spokesperson for the now defunct strippers rights organization in Ont. I've also done "my testimony" a couple times over the past 5 years but I definitely need some work.

Funny, we finally bought a second vehicle last week too so I can finally get out of this little town that I'm trapped in all week. It all seems to be coming together at the same time.

I think this is it. I could use some prayer. I need to BE in prayer. Pray for me to be motivated to spend more time with God. Pray for me to actually DO it. Please!!!!!!

Just want to ask for prayers. We are hitting some rough waters right now. My husband is losing his job at the end of the month and it has nothing to do with the economy. We don't have any savings to speak of and well, we're stressing. Please lift us up.
