Sort of scared to begin sewing project

I know it seems beyond silly, but I just need some encouragement. My husband and I are almost finished with some remodeling projects, one of which is a window seat and the box cushion cover for it. We have bought (expensive)fabric, materials, etc. This is to be my first sewing project since a home ec. class when I was 13.

I have never sewn anything without a pattern, and the thought of doing so is actually paralizing. We are having about a dozen dinner guests at the end of the week, and I know I will have to give a house tour.

HELP!!! I need advice and encouragement to try to learn how to use my (new) sewing machine. I mainly need advice not to be a coward. I know this is so childish and stupid but I am honestly afraid of mucking this up.

Rather than rush it and pressure yourself why not just buy some cheap cuhsions, and then when you have the time to ENJOY it you can work on it, using the material you bought for it?

The window seat is an odd shape, so buying cheap cushions, besides being wasteful, would not fit. I'm just nervous about working with hundreds of dollars of material.

Make some other stuff, cheap and simple, for practice, first.

How did it turn out?

My sewing methods for seat cushions: staples! You can recover a wooden chair seat by wrapping the fabric around wood and foam, stapling it taut. This could be done with a window seat, too.

Machines can be so finicky. Sometimes I end up sewing things by hand.
