Alright, this was a topic that I think merits some healthy discussion. About two years ago, I attended a bible study and I was taught that taking pharmaceutical drugs was indeed sorcery.

Now, before we start, I do know about sorcery being translated to pharmakeia in the Greek. And I'm not here to convince anyone that these medications ARE or ARE NOT equated to sorcery.

What I'm aiming at here is to gauge what other SDA Christians understand from this. In my own personal life, I have been confused and have been jumping on and off of Concerta (to treat ADHD) in the last couple years due to that bible lesson I attended. I was diagnosed as a child, I forget what year or age I was. I did notice some improvement when I reformed my diet and began using herbal medicine (ginko biloba, reishi mushroom). But I did continue to struggle to a significant degree with my coursework, being attentive when others speak to me, becoming organized, remembering important details, and compulsiveness - so I'd resume taking my medicine again and these things would improve.

I know a lot of people feel that ADD/ADHD is almost an illegitimate condition - a lot of it has to do with so many people claiming to have it, along with the simplicity of feigning symptoms to be diagnosed.

However, nobody likes to fake things like bipolar disorder, or schizophrenia - which are also managed through prescribed medication.

Again, I'm not trying to take a side here, just painting a picture to illustrate why I CAN'T take a side. I see where people fail to reform their diets before running to medication.. but then I see other people that inherited physical and mental illnesses take medication to manage their symptoms, which allows them to successfully integrate into their communities.

So, what IS the deal with this? I'm looking for different perspectives or scripture references to gain a better understanding on this. I want to possess an understanding that allows me to take a stance and remain there.

Revelation 18:23 "And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee: for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived."

Thanks everyone!

I have several friends and family with bipolar disorder, and in most its mild so we just take it in stride and no harm no foul. But in a few its much more serious, and if they take the meds they are fine and things go normal as can be, but if they don't we find them wandering in the streets or driving to unknown destinations. So the meds are needed in their cases, but I feel that diet also has a lot to do with it but don't understand it well enough to give foods that are beneficial. I would have to ask them to see what was recommended for them and see what they tell me and see if I find something helpful.
