Ever heard the lyrics to a song that just hit you perfectly, where you knew exactly what the person meant when they wrote those words? I thought it'd be interesting to start a thread where people can post lyrics of songs that they can really identify with. Here's one of mine....

"Muzzle" - The Smashing Pumpkins

"And in my mind as I was floating
Far above the clouds
Some children laughed I'd fall for certain
For thinking that I'd last forever
But I knew exactly where I was
And I knew the meaning of it all
And I knew the the distance to the sun
And I knew the echo that is love
And I knew the secrets in your spires
And I knew the emptiness of youth
And I knew the solitude of heart
And I knew the murmurs of the soul
And the world is drawn into your hands
And the world is etched upon your heart
And the world so hard to understand
Is world you can't live without
And I knew the silence of the world"

Aaaaahhhhhhh. Man that's such a great song. Makes me think of those great times when you realize that everything is OK and you really don't have to understand everything in this world. All you can do is enjoy it and help others to enjoy it with you.

very true. that song is great. im gonna have to think about what song really touches me lyrically speaking,,,,probably "pilgrim" from Enya

Pilgrim, how you journey
On the road you chose
To find out why the winds die
And where the stories go.
All days come from one day
That much you must know,
You cannot change what’s over
But only where you go.

One way leads to diamonds,
One way leads to gold,
Another leads you only
To everything you’re told.
In your heart you wonder
Which of these is true;
The road that leads to nowhere,
The road that leads to you.

Will you find the answer
In all you say and do?
Will you find the answer
In you?

Each heart is a pilgrim,
Each one wants to know
The reason why the winds die
And where the stories go.
Pilgrim, in your journey
You may travel far,
For pilgrim it’s a long way
To find out who you are...

Pilgrim, it’s a long way
To find out who you are...

Pilgrim, it’s a long way
To find out who you are...

I think everyone has felt this at one time or another. I know I have, minus the super girly stuff Conor never shuts up about.

Sunrise, Sunset Lyrics

Sunrise, sunset.
Sunrise, sunset.
Swiftly go the days.
Sunrise, sunset.
You wake up, then you undress.
It always is the same.
A sunrise and a sunset.
You are lying while you confess, keep trying to explain.
The sunrise and the sun sets you realize
and then you forget what you have been trying to retain.
But everybody knows that it is all about the things
that get stuck inside of your head,
like the songs your roommate sings
or a vision of her body as she stretches out on your bed.
She raised her hands in the air and asked you,
When was the last time you looked in the mirror?
Because you have changed.
Yeah, you have changed.
Sunrise, sunset.
You are hopeful and then you regret.
The circle never breaks.
With each sunrise and sunset there is a change of heart or address.
Is there nothing that remains?
For a sunrise or a sunset.
You are manic or you’re depressed.
Will you ever feel ok?
It’s a sunrise and sunset, your lover is an actress.
Did you really think she would stay?
For a sunrise and sunset.
You are either coming or you just left but you are always on the way.
Towards a sunrise or a sunset, a scribble or a sonnet.
They are really just the same.
To the sunrise and the sunset.
The master and his servant have exactly the same fate.
It’s a sunrise and a sunset.
From a cradle to a casket.
There ain’t no way to escape.
The sunrise and the sunset.
Hold your sadness like a puppet, just keep putting on the play.
But everything you do is leading to the point
where you just won’t know what to do.
And at that moment you may laugh
but there is someone there who will be laughing louder than you.
So it’s true, the trick is complete.
Now you have become everything you said that you never would be.
You’re a fool! You’re a fool!
Sunrise, sunset, sunrise, sunset.
The sunrise and the sunset.
Sunrise, sunset.
Go home to your apartment
and put the cassette in the tape deck and let that fever play.
Sunrise, sunset.
Where are you Arienette?
Where are you Arienette?

by Bright Eyes.

Mine would have to be U2 Gone.

You get to feel so guilty got so much for so little
Then you find that feeling just won't go away
You're holding on to every little thing so tightly
Till there's nothing left for you anyway

GOODBYE YOU CAN KEEP THIS SUIT OF LIGHTS
I'LL BE UP WITH THE SUN
AND NOT COMING DOWN... I'M NOT COMING DOWN
IM NOT COMING DOWN

You wanted to get somewhere so badly
You had to loose yourself along the way
You change a name but that's okay... it's necessary
And what you leave behind you don't miss anyway

GOODBYE YOU CAN KEEP THIS SUIT OF LIGHTS
I'LL BE UP WITH THE SUN
AND NOT COMING DOWN... I'M NOT COMING DOWN
I'M NOT COMING DOWN

AND I'M ALREADY GONE
Felt that way all along
Closer to you every day
Didn't want it that much anyway

You're taking steps that make you feel dizzy
Then you get to like the way it feels
You hurt yourself you hurt your lover

Then you discover...
What you thought was freedom is just greed
Goodbye... no emotional goodnight
I'll be up with the sun
Are you still holding on
I'm not coming down
I'm not coming down

Oh yes, have to love Gone! I love it enough to have it quoted in my signature.

Personally, I find a few songs have really affected me in a big way, even if it's not in a way originally intended by U2. Here's one of my absolute favourites.

Please (live from Sarajevo, 23 September 1997)
Words and music by U2

Our country's a little like your country. Just a little. Coming from Ireland, coming from Ireland. And when our people get up off their knees too ...

So you never knew love
'til you crossed the line of grace
And you never felt wanted
'til you had someone slap your face
And you never felt alive
'til you'd almost wasted away
You had to win
You couldn't just pass
The smartest *** [another word for 'donkey']
At the top of the class
Your flying colours
Your family tree
And all your lessons in history

Please ... please ... please
Get up off your knees
Now please ... please ... please
Leave me out

So you never knew
How low you'd stoop to make that call
And you never knew
What was on the ground 'til they made you crawl
So you never knew
That the heaven you keep, you stole
Your Catholic blues
Your convent shoes
Your stick-on tattoos
Now they're making the news
Your holy war
Your northern star
Your sermon on the mount
From the boot of your car

Please ... please ... please
Get up off your knees
Now please ... please ... please
Leave me out

'Cause love is big
And love is tough
But love is not what you're thinking of, oh

September
Streets capsizing, spilling over, and down a drain
Shards of glass
Splinters like rain
But you could only feel your own pain
October
Talk getting nowhere
November, December
September, here we go starting again

Please ... please ... please
Get up off your knees
Now please

So love is big
It's bigger than us
But love is not what you're thinking of
Oh-oh-oh *Bono continues wailing through Edge's guitar riff, described by some as "like a banshee"*

It's what lovers deal
It's what lovers steal
You know I found it hard to receive
But you, my love, I could never believe

Please ... please ... please ... let's get up off our knees, now please ... please ... please ... get up off your knees, now please ... please ... please ... get up off your knees now ... please ... please ... get up off your knees now ... pleeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaase ... pleeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaase ... please *synchs into Where The Streets Have No Name*

Phish has a song called "Sleep" which pretty much describes my struggle to wake up on the weekends :). Its about being half-awake, and remembering some image from a dream, but the more you become conscious the faster it fades away, so if you want to see this image again you must fall back asleep.

I can't describe the feeling when

I'm in my bed asleep and then
I wake up with a vision blurred
And all my efforts are detered
To reconstruct this image lost

There're certain things my mind must do
and even though they're very few
The image glistens like a gem

Repairing is not one of them
So I'm awake though in my mind
The image thats so unrefined
is calling to me from the deep
and tempting me to fall asleep

Another Phish song that is really deep is "Waves." My take on it is that the waves they are describing are somehow similar to prayer, blessings, grace - these invisible spiritual "things" (for lack of a better word) that have a profound effect on people, although we have no idea how they move, the magnitude of effect, or any sort of measurement at all. But we can feel them and know they are there. Or it can be like when you are thinking of a loved one, and they are thinking of you, and you wonder if they know that they are in your throughts and prayers....

How is it I never see
The waves that bring her words to me
For though unseen they drift around
They catch my breath and knock me down

I feel them quickly swirling by
As they withdraw with my reply
And slip into the dark of night
As I attempt to stay upright

Instead I'm stranded on my knees
As words depart upon the breeze
That quickly drifts away from here
And possibly won't reach her ear

If we could see these many waves
That flow through clouds and sunken caves
She'd sense at least the words that sought her
On the wind and underwater

Sleep is on the album "Farmhouse," track 9.
Its also on Live Phish 4 from Fukoka, Japan - one of the few times it has ever been played live. They usually do not take encore song requests, but when they came back out for the encore, some guy yelled "SLEEP!!" and Trey stopped and said "Well, we just have to play this one." So he played it by himself and then they went on to do the encore song they'd originally intended.

(Ben Harper)
Listen mister brother sister
Family and friend
I fear with each day pass
Our time grows closer to the end
Listen stranger passer by
And those I never knew
There's not one day that you are living
Has been promised to you
I am a God fearing man
I'm a God fearing man
I reach out for my God's hand
I'm a God fearing man
Listen mother sister brother
Relatives and kin
You want to know just where you're going
You got to know where you've been
Tell me what gives one the right
To say their God is better than anybody else
Don't we all have a right
To find God for our self
I am a God fearing man
I'm a God fearing man
I reach up for my God's hand
I'm a God fearing man
When I rise with the morning sun

it's even better to see it live you can see it at http://www.ben-harper.com/
under medias. It's called 'God fearing man' obviously

"Typical Situations"

ten fingers we have each
nine planets around the sun repeat
eight ball is the last if you triumphant be
seven oceans pummel the shores of the sea
it's a typical situation
in the typical times
too many choices
everybody's happy
everybody's free
we'l keep the big door open
everyone'll come around
why are you different
why are you that way
if you don't get in line
we'll lock you away
it all comes down to nothing
six senses feeling
five around a sense of self
four seasons turn on and turn off
i can see
three corners from this corner
two is a perfect number
but one
everybody's happy
everybody's free
we'll keep the big door open
and everyone'll come around
why are you different
why are you that way
if you don't step in line
we'll lock you away
it's a typical situation
in these typical times
we can't do thing about it

I love these lyrics. In my opinion, Seattle produced the coolest lyrics of all time.

Would? -- Alice in Chains

Know me broken by my master
Teach thee on child of love hereafter

Into the flood again
Same old trip it was back then
So I made a big mistake
Try to see it once my way

Drifting body it's sole desertion
Flying not yet quite the notion

Into the flood again
Same old trip it was back then
So I made a big mistake
Try to see it once my way

Into the flood again
Same old trip it was back then
So I made a big mistake
Try to see it once my way

Am I wrong?
Have I run too far to get home
Have I gone?
And left you here alone
Am I wrong?
Have I run too far to get home
Have I gone?
And left you here alone
If I would, could you?

Yeah Disarm is my favorite song off Siamese Dream probably, both musically and lyrically--gorgeous. Heh maybe we should just talk about the Smashing Pumpkins and nothing else, this is the first time we've agreed I think... :D

OK this thread was gettin' a bit low on the food chain, so I'll put another one up here because I'm enjoying it so much....this one's a nice long story...

Belle and Sebastian- "If You're Feeling Sinister"

Anthony walked to his death because he thought he'd never feel this way again
If he goes back to the house then things would go from bad to worse, what could he do?
He wants to remember things exactly as he left them on that Wednesday
And if there is something else beyond, he isn't scared because
It's bound to be less boring than today
It's bound to be less boring than tomorrow

Hilary walked to her death because she couldn't think of anything to say
Everybody thought that she was boring, so they never listened anyway
Nobody was really saying anything of interest, she fell asleep
She was into S&M and bible studies
Not everyone's cup of tea she would admit to me
Her cup of tea, she would admit to no one
Her cup of tea, she would admit to me
Oh but her cup of tea, she would admit to no one

Hilary went to the Catholic Church because she wanted information
The vicar, or whatever, took her to one side and gave her confirmation
Saint Theresa's calling her, the church up on the hill is looking lovely
But it doesn't interest, the only things she wants to know is
How and why and when and where to go
How and why and when and where to follow
How and why and when and where to go
How and why and when and where to follow

But if you are feeling sinister
Go off and see a minister
He'll try in vain to take away the pain of being a hopeless unbeliever

When she got back, her spirituality was thrown into confusion
So she got a special deal on renting
From the man at Rediffusion
"Look at me! I'm on TV
It makes up for the shortcomings of being poor
Now I'm in a million pieces", picked up for deliberation
By the people listening at home
By the people watching on the telly
By the people listening at home
By the people watching on the telly

But if you are feeling sinister
Go off and see a minister
Chances are you'll probably feel better
If you stayed and played with yourself

A bit of an odd, depressing ending to an odd, depressing song. Still, I identify with quite a bit of it.

Sure, quite a few. One of the most intense was 'Punk Rock Song' by Bad Religion. I do not have the lyrics on me just now, but I will post them soon.

Here we go -

Have you been to the desert? Have you walked with the dead?
There's a hundred thousand children being killed for their bread
And the figures don't lie they speak of human disease
But we do what we want and we think what we please

Have you lived the experience? Have you whitnessed the plague?
People making babies sometimes just to escape
In this land of competition the compassion is gone
Yet we ignore the needy and we keep pushing on
We keep pushing on...

This is just a punk rock song
Written for the people who can see something's wrong
Like ants in a colony we do our share
But there's so many other f###ing insects out there
And this is just a punk rock song

Have you visited the quagmire? Have you swam in the s##t?
The party conventions and the real politik
The faces always different the rhetoric the same
But we swallow it all, and we see nothing change
Nothing has changed...

This is just a punk rock song
Written for the people who can see something's wrong
Like workers in a factory we do our share
But there's so many other f###ing robots out there
And this is just a punk rock song

10 million dollars on a losing campaign
20 million starving and writhing in pain
Big strong people unwilling to give
Small in vision and perspective
One in five kids below the poverty line
One population running out of time

----------

One of the best pieces of radical polemic I have ever heared and the tune is fantastic - simple but spot on, like the lyrics.
