  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I am a member of the safety crew at a Jet Sprints association, and I took my newish camera along with me on the weekend, and took some spectacular photos.

Enjoy!

The First photo we have is a boat called True Blue, which won the day.
Next up we have a boat called Swamp Rat, showing just how much water these little beauties throw up.
Finally we have a boat called Auto Parts Direct.

That's a LOT of water!

Forgive my ignorance, but why are there two members in each boat? To an uneducated peon like me, it seems like one guy could do it all and with less weight, be faster, or fit in more powerful components for the weight, but I suppose there's a better explanation than "co-dependant spouse."

Well, there's a driver, and a navigator. These races take place around a very tight course, with lots of twists and turns, and they have to go around specific corners in a specific order (otherwise the run is not counted) the navigator uses hand signals to direct the driver where to go. Believe me, you aren't capable of hearing a lot when you're in the boat. :D

I like the first best. What kind of camera? You did good compositionally, the only thing I would have wished more, was more detail in the faces (helmets) of those in the boat. Keep on shooting those shots :)

I was shooting handheld (ugh) with a Fuji S5000 digital.

My two basic problems:

1. I'm supposed to be safety crew, so I kind of have to be on my toes for a crash
2. no tripod... maybe on another occasion i'll set up properly...

I also want to get a better zoom lens, but I'm working on that... :p

slick photos!

I've never heard of jet sprint boats, but hey, looks like a blast. Bet it'd be awesome to drive one of those babies!

Handheld I wouldn't think would be a problem in that kind of a situation, I mean, it's so bright out and your photos don't seem blurry (due to camera shake) if anything, I'd just play around with the manual settings until you get something that is sharp and yet still gives the water some blur to remind us, that it is in fact, water ;) (kind of the ultimate paradox...because the boat's moving so fast!)

but again, those look neat :p

You did well dude, I probably wouldn't have shot them that good. I have to pickup a new tripod myself, mind broke, so don't buy cheap like I did heheh.

What can I say, mad Auto-focus. *grin* Actually, I was surprised how well they turned out. (these are just a small sample of the ~200 photos I took over the course of the day) Basically what I did a lot of the time was just to shoot a series of 5 shots of a boat coming around a corner or things like that... Of those 5, not all of them turn out, but usually there's some good ones in there.

One of the major problems (and hazards as far as getting close up facial shots) is the fact that these boats move at up to about 80 miles an hour or more, so they don't stay in one place for very long. Also there is an incredible amount of glare coming off the water, and it took a lot of fiddling around just to get the camera to take photos in the first place that weren't all white.

The photo below is about the closest I get to a headshot. There's also one there of Swamp Rat out of the water to show you an idea of the size of these boats.

Thanks for the comments guys :)
