  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

So why are worship leaders afraid to branch out of certain styles??

No it wouldn't be. So...let me ask this question, which is what I was originally asking earlier.

What are people's (i.e. the people who have been posting on this thread) definition of worship, specifically their view of biblical worship. What do they see in the bible as being worship, and are there current trends in churches that they view as unbiblical worship?

I think there should be a consensus as to the basics of what we are talking about. It's hard to say why worship leaders may be wary of branching out in worship styles if we all have a different opinion or definition of what worship is.

Once again, the question is,


Personally, I think the original question dealt with the musical aspect of praise and worship. I think biblical worship is doing all things to the glory of God and, according to Romans 12:1, presenting ourselves as living sacrifices.

As far as corporate musical worship goes, I think facilitating the worship of others in a group setting is the main goal, and sometimes certain styles of music would not appeal to and edify everyone at a worship service. I think it's almost a lowest common denominator issue; if you get too specialized, you will inevitably alienate someone. You can't please everyone all of the time, and worship is about pleasing God, but I feel worship leaders need to always be searching for the best way to help THEIR congregation worship, and that may be with reggae music, or it may be with hymns. Any style of music can be worshipful, but not always to everyone.

I am. But what is worldly music? Are we talking about actual musical notes, phrasing, chording, etc.? Or lyrical content? I think the lyrics are the key. If they are praising and worshiping God, then what does it matter what musical vehicle they are carried in?

I personally feel, but would never demean other's opinions about this, that if I am singing a song about the glories of God, in a rock and roll style, I am worshiping God, not offering a strange fire. The Holy Spirit now intercedes for us, for me. I am standing before God saying, I love you, I need you, praise your name! How is that not worship?

What we have of the Psalms now are the lyrics. But they are songs, meant to be sung. And they were probably sung in the musical style of the day.

I agree, it shouldn't be a rock concert. So, if using a musical style that is popular in the world is irreverent, what do we use? How do we worship? I agree that the focus should never be on the artist, or worship leader. How does that look in practicality? Only hymns? No instruments? Only music from a certain time period? Only Psalms? I only ask a lot of questions because I really am curious.

Hymns were modern at one time, and some actually quite controversial. So hymns were written and created at a certain time and they are the pinnacle of worship? Do we stagnate in our creativity, and stop using the gifts God has given us to create new works of worship? I agree hymns are fantastic, and probably have some of the best lyrics ever written about God. However, I don't think we can arbitrarily say, "This style of music is the best ever for worshiping God." I don't know of anywhere that God said "Hymns are it. You guys go ahead and stop writing new worship songs."

And I can reverently worship God while playing my electric guitar.

Hahaha, horrible points and a weak arguement here. Your claim that it is delivered by an irreverent vehicle is absurd. Who created music? Who created sound vibrations? Who designed so flawlessly? The Creator - so to say that the music is irreverent is absurd, most especially when it sings His praises!
