I think it's a good thing that winter's almost over, because there are too many people here with moods that show they have cabin fever. :(

The Gospel is hard to find ... the churches are filled with apostasy... Islam is gaining ground... the USA aborts more children every year... gays and lesbians marry openly... and the concept of family is nearly undermined.

And being grumpy doesn't change any of that.

And being grumpy doesn't change any of that.

James 4:8-10
8Draw near to God and He will draw near to you Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9Be miserable and mourn and weep; let your laughter be turned into mourning and your joy to gloom. 10Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you.

Directed toward sinners, not the saved:

James 4:8-10
8Draw near to God and He will draw near to you Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Be miserable and mourn and weep; let your laughter be turned into mourning and your joy to gloom. 10Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you.

Directed toward the saints:

Galatians 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.

We have so many reasons to be happy, why waste time living in misery with the sinners?

1 Peter 4:18
But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.

Whoa! Last time I checked the "saved" WERE sinners! The recipients of James' comments in James 4 is the church! Which is why he says "What is the source of quarrels and conflicts among you?" We can't dichotomize Scripture so as to make one verse for the church and another for the unbelievers!

No, these verses are for you and me believers... the beattitudes are for us!

Yes, Gal 5:22-23 is to the saints, but notice there is also "longsuffering", the joy spoken of for the believer is not some "happy clappy" joy without reason, but a joy rooted and founded in their salvation. That doesn't mean that we're happy all the time, but instead, recognizing our everyday sinfulness we mourn with sorrow over our sins and yet are glad because of Christ's saving us.

We should be accutely aware of the sinfulness of the population around us as well as our own, just as Isaiah was when he wrote:

Isaiah 6:5
Then I said," Woe is me, for I am ruined! Because I am a man of unclean lips,And I live among a people of unclean lips; For my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts."

There are times for dancing and celebrating... yet given the state of the Church today, I find little to celebrate about.

Ecclesiastes 7:2
It is better to go to a house of mourning Than to go to a house of feasting,Because that is the end of every man,And the living takes it to heart.

When the prophets (and Apostles) saw that Israel or the church was in disarray and danger of apostasy they mourned.

Ecclesiastes 7:4
The mind of the wise is in the house of mourning,While the mind of fools is in the house of pleasure.

Finally, mourning isn't grumpiness, and I'm NOT making a case for being 'grumpy'. :)
