How many times does Article 11 of the Treaty of Tripoli need to be quoted?

Besides the simple fact that the US wasn't based on Christianity, let's imagine it was...so what? What is so amazing about "our" country that makes it sacrosanct? There's nothing special about the US. It's government has fostered blind nationalism to make it feel like it;s incredible. The reality is that many countries in the world live up to the ideals that the US spouts infinitely better. Democracy? Freedom? Justice? America is a pathetic excuse as an exemplar of those ideals.

And it's not just the governments of the last couple of centuries...the Constitution is nothing special. It was written hundreds of years ago, and may well have been relevant then, but that doesn't necessarily make it relevant now. Of course, it tries to enshrine phenomenal ideals, but that doesn't mean it does it in the right way.

In short, Americans should get their head out of their own arses and realise they're not that great.

Christianity permeated it's creation, whats amazing is they did not make it exclusive to christianity. And no it's not a pathetic excuse of such.

Are you nuts? A constitution is important when you are organising a body that governs people. And what made the constitution important then is still important now, especially now that radicalism seems to be on the rise (altho it most likely is not, thats what the media makes it appear).

In short, Americans should get their head out of their own arses and realise they're not that great.
or you.

In what way? Certainly some of the founding fathers where Christian and that informed their reasons and motives. However the founding of the Government was not based on Christianity. It of course, being the predominant religion, had influence on the founding.

The atheists and non-believers are always so hard to in down on this...

Sometimes, 'the USA is under the influence of [evil] Christian extremists!'

Sometimes, 'the USA has separation of church and state and should never have it interfered with,' (fair enough)

But you have to hash this out...

OK, if we are not a nation with a religious government,

can't we still be essentially what amounts to a religious nation, e.g., a nation in a non-political sense of the body?

Because if that is the case, we rank up there as one of the more religious countries on the earth.

What Treaty of Tripoli so strategically and diplomatically implied was that a nation cannot be any religion any more than a mountain, tree, or a body of water can be "christian."

People can certainly be christian and ideals can be of a christian persuasion ---- but what Tripoli wasn't told was good for the peace....

A constitution, perhaps. But the US Constitution is nothing special in itself, and should be much more open to change and far less worshipped by arrogant Americans.

If you're able to realize that a nation, such as the United States, cannot be Christian, then what was the point of this post?

Goodness, why should we make it easier to change? It seems to work just fine, and the long process helps assure that only the most important and sober changes will actually succeed.

Besides, we wouldn't worship it so much if it weren't basically the best ever.

Sure, the United States is a religious nation. Therefore we can lay at the feet of the religious nation, the believers, institutionalized slavery based on racism, breaking treaties to the indigenous tribes on this continent as well as the ensuing wars of imperialism undertaken by the United States. A religious nation.

Or rather, we could not attempt to reduce the complexities of defining a nation comprised of a vast number of different cultures, a relatively very short history with a very high dynamic in regards to social and political change as well as understanding that the statements of a few men or a documents fail at providing an accurate view of the populace as a whole.

Doesn't matter at this point.

The Congress and Supreme Court no longer give the Constitution much credence these days.

People are also forgetting that all of those proclamations were made over a century ago. Alot has changed since then, look at the average American then and the average American now. A large portion of Americans now are not Christian, when back then they were a dominating majority.

Alot of change has occured since that past century.
