  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

There was an CD that I was eagerly awaiting to be released on January 11th. I heard some of the tracks ahead of time, and I was amazed at how good they were. This was my kind of music.

I was doing some reading on it, and I read that it was a concpet album. It told the story of a soldier who fought in the Crusades, but then realized what he was doing was wrong. My first thought was something along the lines of "this could be bad, but just remember this is a work of fiction." Besides, the Crusades did turn many people away from the Catholic Church. Then I read through some of the lyrics, and this jumped out at me right away:

"It's time to find Redemption
Only love defies the Resurection
Mark my words: God's abandoned this world!

Would I live again?
What's the new religion?
And what shall be the bread?
Really I don't give a damn!
never wanna live again
In this vain emotion
Over for me!"

Now, I just don't know if I would be able to go out and buy a CD that has a message like this. It's so disapointing that God has given such a wonderful musical gift to some people, but yet they end up turning it against God.

Anybody else have an experience similar to this?

Have you read all the lyrics? In a concept album often the stories are a journey through a charrs development. This might be his 'moment of despair' his dark night of the sould. See how he comes through in the end and what the 'conclusions' of the album are...

I too have known the feeling though, of admiring excerpts of a work, wondering what the maker is like and then find him filled with ideas that stood so paradoxal against my own that it hurt a bit.

These lyrics come from the last track of the CD. This is the "conclusion" of the album.

Yea... I still want to buy the album to appreciate the gift of music that God has given, but I just wouldn't feel right. :(

Remember the "Christian" band Creed?

I used to like them a lot, until they turned into pop music. They were never a Christian band. Just a band that had Christian undertones to some of their songs.

My favorite artist of all time is the songwriter/musician genius Billy Corgan... He wrote some very questioning lyrics about God in some of his earlier work in the form of the Smashing Pumpkins. Although he's not necessarily an official Christian now, he does have a strong spiritual belief in God. His last album was with his band Zwan, which was entitled "Mary Star of The Sea"... which, as it turns out, was a Catholic Church in Florida near the recording studio... where he went to pray to Mary every day. His songs and his words reflect the change.

However... I still find the old music to be genius. It represents a part of the journey.

Dream Theater,

Is the CD by a band called "Dream Theater" by any chance? :)

Thankfully not. :)

From what I have read, 3 of the 5 members of Dream Theater are Christian, and the other 2 are Jewish. John Petrucci, Dream Theater's guitarist, is the member which I admire the most and he happens to be a practicing Catholic.
