That was pretty good but he made one in the 80s that was terrible.

Too much ho-hum and not enough heigh-ho. But seriously, I can't muster much enthusiasm for retreads. Disney or otherwise. The lack of creativity is disappointing.

Recovering only a third of your budget in the opening weekend is actually terrible and a nearly surefire sign of a major flop.

It isn't enough to recover your budget, remember. You don't want to break even, you want to turn a profit. Worse, the budget we see is just the production budget, not things like marketing, which can be even higher than the production budget, and you need to make all of that back too. And the money you see at the box office isn't all going to the studio; theaters take a cut. So to turn a profit, you need to not only make your budget back, but make it back multiple times over. If you only made 1/3 of your budget in your opening weekend, that is very unlikely to happen.

Obviously, there will be money to be made in subsequent weeks. But the opening weekend is going to be your biggest, and it'll make less money in subsequent weeks. The opening weekend will usually be about 30-40% of the total income for a movie. So if you've made back a third of your budget on the opening weekend... it means you're going to usually only get about your production budget back, which means your film is a big flop and you lost serious money on it. You really want to make your full budget back on opening weekend.

Now, if this film only opened in a few countries this weekend, and a lot of markets were coming in future weeks, then it might not be such a big deal. But it looks like this already opened up in all of the major markets. So one third of your production budget remains pretty bad.

There are some exceptions. People thought Elemental was a flop after it had a mediocre opening weekend, but it had surprisingly strong "legs" (meaning subsequent weeks didn't drop as much as they normally do) and thus its opening weekend was only 19% of its final box office (I'm speaking domestically, internationally it's harder to figure things out because of being released on different dates in a bunch of countries). As a result, while Elemental was probably still a disappointment, it didn't end up being a flop. But things like that are exceptions. Unless Snow White manages to pull that off, it's a major flop.

It’s such a tragedy how they are destroying the legacy of Walt Disney, who was a devout Christian, a patriotic American, a man who epitomized family values and human decency, who was in no respect a racist but who was sincerely loving and pious, and who incorporated Christian themes into his motion pictures such as Snow White, Cindarella, Pinnochio, and especially The Sleeping Beauty (for these were the folk literature of European Christians, written or orally promulgated to instill Christian values in the youth, and Walt Disney was himself a Christian, who stated that he sought to incorporate the divine into his work).

lol, I legit can't tell if you're serious or not. I haven't seen Pinnochio in years, so I won't comment on that one, but there's nothing at all "Christian" about Snow White, Cinderella, or Sleeping Beauty, unless Princess Charming is somehow a metaphor for Christ and the hapless princesses the (occasionally underaged) Bride of Christ.

I mean, the Grimm brothers definitely added some Christian elements and tweaked things around to make them more kid-friendly, but yeah, the original oral tradition stories were absolutely, 100% not intended for children (lots of sex, rape, violence, murder, etc), and while they might have picked up Christian elements by osmosis over the centuries of retelling, most were not inherently Christian morality tales.

No, since Latinas have been playing Snow White at the park for decades. Rachel Zegler’s Latina ethnicity is not a problem. Rather, the problem is that the story is not the classical story of Snow White but is rather a Marxist reinterpretation of it. I am opposed to Communism, and I am particularly opposed to capitalist countries promoting Communist propaganda. It has shades of the Commercial Coordination which as a scholar of the history of the DDR gives me the shivers. And Walt Disney was strongly opposed to communism, and was a devout Christian and proponent of the American free enterprise system.

He was also one of only two major owners of film companies in Hollywood who was a Republican, but unlike Howard Hughes*, Walt Disney was married and monogamous, adhering to traditional family values.

*Sadly, Howard Hughes had a tendency to get involved in his youth with various women and then by the time a family would have been helpful had the effects of his grievous injury in 1946 in the XF-11 crash, and was likely no longer in a position to reproduce, instead being dependent on pain medication due to his serious injuries. It also appears that Howard Hughes was the victim of elder abuse by the LDS, since he depended on pain medication, and they provided it, and made an effort to get his fortune, but that attempt was foiled and he was declared intestate.

I admire Howard Hughes as a pioneer of the airline industry and as an airman, and most people in aviation have the highest respect for him as a great airman, a man who one associates with the likes of Charles Lindbergh, Chuck Yeager, Tex Johnston and Amelia Earhart in terms of technical ability and accomplishments.

Interestingly Walt Disney and Howard Hughes not only knew each other, but TWA was the first airline sponsor of Disneyland, sponsoring the Flight to the Moon, with the iconic Moonliner rocket painted in TWA white and red (later, after Howard Hughes lost control, United would sponsor Disneyland via the Enchanted Tiki Room attraction, which made sense as United was the leading airline in California and Hawaii, and Eastern would sponsor Walt Disney World, and then Delta became the official airline of both parks in the 1990s when Dole took over sponsorship of the Enchanted Tiki Room).

I am entirely serious. I would in particular urge you to rewatch Sleeping Beauty. Not only am I serious, but so was Walt Disney, when he stated that he sought to express the divine in his animated features.

I have a 4yo daughter. I’ve seen each of those movies and read the associated books several times in the last several months. Snow White is the most vacuous of the three. It’s not anti-Christian, but there’s nothing inherently Christian about a girl fleeing her murderous step-mother, breaking into the house of some strangers, and having her poisoning cured by a minor sexual assault. There are characters within the story (e.g. the huntsman) who act according to Christian morals, but that’s true of just about any good guy in any story.
