  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Snakes for Christmas
(ABC News, 6 Dec 2018)

From the ‘Only in Australia’ file

The Court Family has been selling freshly cut pines out of a five-acre property in Wolumla New South Wales, for nearly a decade, but this year an inundation of deadly brown snakes has led to untended trees and dangers to browsing visitors.

While the snakes have not yet impacted sales, they have hindered the Christmas experience. Ms Court said she also been less able to maintain the trees this year because of the snakes, so has been selling them as a bushier "organic version", due to less trimming.

She said the drought was causing more snakes to come through her property, which is wedged between a sub-divided block and a creek.

"Normally I'm out in the garden in my flip flops," she said.

"But this year, I'm wearing gumboots and not in the garden nearly as much."

Brown snakes are one of the most venomous land snakes in the world and are often found throughout the eastern half of mainland Australia.

WIRES Reptile Handling Trainer, Gary Pattinson, said

"They're far more prevalent in the hotter season,"

"We'll be seeing them around from now until April or May."

Mr Pattinson said the dryer conditions should not cause an increase in the species numbers but that the warmer weather had caused them to come out of hibernation early and be more active.

Deb Court has had plenty of close calls with snakes while trying to manage the Christmas rush.

"Mum opened the car door the other day and a brown was under her foot," Ms Court said.

“I had one go through my legs while gardening.”

"I carry a rake around with me at all times now."

To prevent buyers from wandering the property, Ms Court now greets them at the front gate.

She also leaves pre-cut trees at the entrance with a sign warning of the snakes.

"[The customers are] very understanding, they often have [snakes] on their property as
well," Ms Court said.

That gives an understanding to the Mark 16 verse about snakes. For Australians it is not as far fetched as what it seems. It is possible to "take up" snakes by accident, as did happen to Paul. But the believer is not to deliberately take up venomous snakes. That would be "tempting God" and that is what Satan tried to get Jesus to do by suggesting He jump off the temple roof to get God to save him. But if a believer happened to be bitten by a snake while going about their normal activities, then the Mark Scripture gives some indication that the bite would not harm them. Thank goodness I don't live there, but if I did and I got bitten by a snake, I'd be breaking the speed limit to get to the nearest treatment clinic - wouldn't you?

At least it wasn't a Giant Australian spider to rival the giant spider Aragog from Harry Potter.

Nope. Running (or driving) in a panic is the worst thing you could do.

Call an ambulance, apply a compression bandage and sit back quietly with the bitten bit raised if possible. The idea is to limit the spread of venom through your blood stream through compression and by keeping your heart rate down as low as possible.

Besides, while a few people get bitten, death by snakebite is rare.

You are right on your advice to stay as calm as possible, but snakes are actually one of the leading killers of man worldwide when it comes to animals. 1st Mosquitos, then humans, then snakes (at least 50,000 annually reported deaths). Creepy things!

As to Australia, not sure on the statistics for death by snake. I looked it up and it seems pretty low, 18 since 2011 when 300 get bit a year, so it's not as rough there --- but still creepy things!

I love snakes. I don't own one myself, but I'd love to have a boa or a smaller snake some day.
