Snakes alive!

One of the awesome things about doing what I do, is every now and then, I get to experience the rare and unexpected. After losing one snake in the long grass, a few minutes later I found these two Red bellied black snakes wrestling. They were totally oblivious to my presence even though I was only a couple of feet away. I spotted a total of six of them today, but these two were by far the most interesting thing I came across all day.

Awesome shots! I love wildlife photography, and have gone to area wildlife refuges for shoots several times around here in Central Florida. I've yet to capture snakes, even though there are plenty out there, so I'm trying hard not to covet your wrestling snakes pic! LOL! Managed to get a few gators, though, which appeased me. Can't wait to see more of your photos....

Beautiful pictures.
Some years ago we came upon a pair of white bellied black snakes in a challenge dance for the attention of a female white belly black snake, that was watching from the high grass nearby.

Amazing sight to watch how deft they were and how strong and graceful in their movements. It was like a ballet of sorts.


Nature is spectacular.

Thankfully venomous snakes are not common here; occasionally you may spot a Timber Rattler (rare).

That's what I initially thought, but apparently it's a show of strength between two males.

How do you know they were two males? It looks more like they are mating to me, but I could be wrong.

That's what I thought when I first saw them, but in doing some research and speaking to people who know snakes well, this is male behaviour and a show of strength for territory.

Mating is typically done in what's called a mating ball, consisting of an orgy of several males and one female.
