  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

A car passenger got the fright of his life when a tiger snake slithered across his foot somewhere on New South Wales far south coast.

He'll check under the driver's seat next time.

We've lived in our suburb for 33 years. We had a small snake in our compost heap a few years ago, but this year I've seen two when I've been walking along a local "bush track" (concrete path through some scrub). I nearly stood on one in January and I was close to the other one a couple of weeks ago. In both cases I saw the tail slither off into long grass on the side of the track. I didn't get enough time to make a guess as to the species, and I wasn't going to go looking for them.

Prior to that I hadn't seen any on the track the whole time we've been here and I've probably covered it a few hundred times in those years.

They're not easy to see. I'm a bit more wary now, even though the odds are still very low.

Bob I came across a brown snake sunbathing itself upon a bicycle pathway some years ago. It looked ever so big perhaps well over a metre. I simply froze on my bike . And then it zoomed off into the vegetation. It was like a zooming torpedo I was horrified in how fast they can move I was some 10 -15 metres away. And me sure it would have had me no worries if it had chosen to come my way. I sure we always have to weary more with composite heaps because they like. More so with their breeding season upon us ..

Since I posted this in October I chanced upon a third snake, and once again it took off before I had much of a chance to identify the species.

I suspect it may have been the same snake I saw last time as it was in the same area and not very big.

If I had to guess I'd say either a green snake, or a small brown snake. The green snakes are not poisonous, but the browns certainly are.

Interesting article, one thing I saw was that there is something called a "Snake Bandage". Used to wrap around the limb and slow the spread of venom. Much different than the razor blade and suction kits, they sell in the states. Looks like a much better idea.

Years ago they used to recommend using a torniquet, but that restricted blood flow to the limb below the binding.

This sometimes led to other medical problems, so they devised the pressure bandage idea.

On a morbid note, the former OIC of our local ambulance station said the most emotional fatality for him was due to a snake bite when he was stationed in Townsville years ago.

A young girl had been playing in the backyard (on a swing maybe) when she jumped off and landed on a Taipan which was hidden in long grass.

It struck her on the chest about five times. She died in minutes.

On a happier note, I heard a Baptist pastor say that when he was a young chap following his father in long grass on their farm he suddenly found he just could not take another step. He said it was like being held in a giant hand - he couldn't move, no matter what he did.

His father came back to see why he was just standing there in mid-stride. As he did so he saw a death adder in the exact spot where his son would have taken his next step.

They're the fastest striking snake in the world.

Obviously God had plans for the son to become a pastor, and protected him. As the pastor said he literally couldn't move.

Why God protected him, and not the young girl was God's choice.
