what do you guys make of the verse in the bible that say's we can only sleep at night? does that mean i can't sleep into the morning time or take naps during the day?

in other words, i can't stay up until 2 in the morning and sleep until noon?

1 Thessalonians 5:4 - But you, brethren, are not in darkness, that the day would overtake you like a thief;
1
Thessalonians 5:5 - for you are all sons of light and sons of day. We are not of night nor of darkness;
1
Thessalonians 5:6 - so then let us not sleep as others do, but let us be alert and sober.
1 Thessalonians 5:7
- For those who sleep do their sleeping at night, and those who get drunk get drunk at night. (NASB)

I am assuming these are the biblical verses you are referring to. If so, I think you're taking it out of context. It does not mean what you are suggesting.

I see I've alarmed people.

I was talking about this verse:

For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night.
1 Thessalonians 5:7

its a command to only sleep at night. so what do you make of it?

here it is in context:

So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be awake and sober. 7 For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night. 8 But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet
1 Thessalonians 5:6-8

I'm thinking i took it out of context too. I don't think it was a command, it was a statement, people get drunk at night and sleep at night generally speaking. but what are YOUR thoughts, should we not sleep during the day?

I don't think it has anything to do with when we should sleep. I think it was just a comparison to light and dark. How darkness = evil, despair and Light = everything God. I think other things can be drawn from it as well. It could be a warning not to let your life be distracted by things of satan, but do things that are in Jesus image.

This sounds about right... otherwise, everybody who works the night shift is sinning without knowing it!

yeah i thought maybe people of the dark should work the night shift and people of the light should work the day or something like that. your probably right though, theres nothing in the bible about how you can't sleep during the day. there is a cry to sluggards who sleep too much and lay in bed for far too long though. what do you guys make of THAT? should we limit how much we sleep?

Being worried about sinning over what time is the "proper" time to sleep is being a little bit too frightened of God and it's no way to live.

If someone is this fearful over little things like sleeping, then something is wrong with the faith or their own interpretation. I couldn't remain under the thumb of a deity that would demand such things, and I don't think we're suppost to be that wracked with guilt.

The verses in 1 Thes. 5 are not telling us literally when we should be awake or sleep. They speak figuratively about people who are "asleep" or "drunk" and are therefore not ready for what may befall them, referring to unbelievers. Those of us who are "of the day," who have been enlightened with the truth of Jesus should be ready for the coming of the Lord, and conduct ourselves in a manner such that we would not be ashamed before the Lord if he came at any moment.

sleep at the end of your day...whether work 8-4 ; 4-12; 12-8...
sleep and recharge rather than party and get into trouble...
do the right thing, grow up, go to bed that you might be awake and aware the next day...

don't do things in excess....don't abuse your self, your body, eat and drink in moderation...
