  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Sleep Paralysis/sixth sense

i just wanted to get some feed back from those who have this condition called Sleep Paralysis. I have been seeing spirits all my life. Have you ever woke up and suddenly you could not move, and you can feel spirits around you. this is the gift that i have. When I was a child, i could see spirits with my naked eyes at night. now I go into a state called Sleep Paralysis. I was wondering if there are anymore out there like me.

I have suffered from sleep paralysis a couple of times, that I can remember, one was especially frightening. I was dreaming (I think) that I felt something pull my foot and yank me out of bed, I then walked down the hallway and met with my roommates mom, who was staying with us that night. I said hi, and walked into the bathroom, I looked into the mirror and saw my face (I have heard that you never see yourself in your dreams, I don't know if that's true or not) I saw my reflection, but my eyes were evil, they were demonic, it wasn't me looking back in the reflection. I don't remember anything after that, but I was terrified in my bed and I couldn't move. I have heard that these episodes can be caused by becoming conscious during r.e.m. sleep, so you are aware of your surroundings, but still dreaming and unable to move. I don't know for sure thought. I don't think I see spirits when I experience sleep paralysis, I don't know anyone else who has either.

Hi!

This condition of seeing dead people and having the feeling of wrestling with spirits isn't completely uncommon, and it is treatable. It's a form of psychosis, which is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. Medication can make your life very normal again, as long as you get treatment soon. Go to the emergency room of your local hospital and tell them what you just told us.

Good things are going to come to you because you told us this today! :)

I used to have periods, when I was younger, when I would be aware of my surroundings but unable to move or "wake" myself . It was spooky, never saw any spirits or anything. Don't know man. If lambslove is serious about the info she gave you I'd check it out.

Okay **I'm not a christian and I feel the need to make that disclaimer before this post**

Most people in the pagan community would consider what you have to be a rare gift that with training could be of huge benifit to you and possibly to the spirits you see and many other applications. Medication has been suggested to get rid of your 'ablility' let's call it. That's one avenue, and a valid one. Another is training. With proper sheilding ablility and proper control of your 'ability' you could stop it from coming upon you unwanted, while still retaining the ablility to use it in the future.

Of course, only you can decide. If this 'ablility' makes you uncomfortable more than it interests you, then medication might be the better option, considering also you're religious choice. However, there are other avenues of controlling the problematic parts without damaging the useful parts that you might consider.

That explains my feeling that someone was pulling me out of bed, an evil spirit or something. My sister has also experienced this, feelings as if she was being strangled while she was sleeping on the couch one day. It is certainly a frightening experience.

How do you know you are not hallucinating?

SP is actually an interesting phenomenon that is believed to account for many alien abduction stories. Reading about it as much as you can, can help prevent it, as the next time it happens you can try and remember what you read, and that can help control it till it goes away.

It's not uncommon for those afflicated with sleep paralysis to feel like they are suffocating or being choked.

There's a good site with lots of info on this phenomenon here: http://www.arts.uwaterloo.ca/~acheyne/S_P.html

I haven't experienced sleep paralysis specifically, but I have experienced hypnopompic hallucinations (these occur during the transition from sleep to awake).

Most recently, I woke up and was staring at the light on the fan I use at night. My room is pitch dark at night and outside of this orange light and my bedside clock, I could hardly see anything. I watched as this light turned into minutature person, who climbed down the fan and started walking around my bedside table.

It was an extremely vivid hallunication that lasted until I reached for my light switch. I can see how people might think such an experience is real. It sure seemed that way.

Another one my vivid experiences with this (which I've relating a number of times now on this board) was where I was dreaming I was in a cage, only to wake up and still "see" this cage around my bed. I got extremely frightened and attempted to open my window to escape. Good thing I couldn't get it open, as my room is on the second floor of the house!

Again, it was an extremely vivid experience that happened to disappear the moment I flipped on the light switch.

I've had sleep paralysis many times before. It frightened me at first but once I understood it, I started enjoying it.
The trick to sleep paralysis is, when you feel the paralysis, do not fight against it. Simply relax your muscles and try to fall back to sleep. (This is hard to do) The more you struggle against it, the longer the paralysis will last.
And yes, I've seen things, heard whispering and felt someone touching me.

My hypnopompic hallucinations are usually aural. I hear someone speaking to me, usually whispering in my ear. This type of hallucination usually comes right after the person has come through a time of great stress. It's just your mind working through the various neural paths, getting everything back in order, like a disc scan procedure on your computer. While it's doing that, strange things can become associated in sequence in your subconsicous mind, which is kicking into action when you are sleepy.

They're pretty weird, but very normal.
