  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What are some basic skills that you think every child should learn as they grow into adult hood? We have had a similar thread a long time ago dealing with skills father's should teach boys, but I want to broaden this to both genders.

*This is not about moral character skills, but actual physical skills. "Kindness" is not a physical skill.

I'll start with a few examples of skills I think every kid should learn growing up. Some of these skills I have, and some I wish someone would have taught me:

1. Play a musical instrument
2. Shoot a gun
3. Sharpen a knife
4. Drive a car
5. Ride a bicycle

This is just a start. I would love to see what everyone else would add to the list.

I disagree with you, but only in part I think boys should learn to cook, clean a house, do dishes, etc.. as well. I am a single man living on my own and I am very thankful for my mom teaching me the skills of preparing and cooking a meal.

And I think sports are valuable for all kids, not just boys.

I would expand on the banking thing to say the specific skill of balancing a check book. Very few young people have that skill these days.

Use of power tools.
Reading a tape measure.
A foreign language
Beyond computer use, basic typing skills. Some kids can use a comp, but their typing skills are very lacking.
Throwing/catching a football.
Ride a motorcycle
Climb a tree

I love some of the ones already given, like changing a tire and swimming. Great one to add to the list.
