First of all, I love this song. It speaks a truth about the culture we find ourselves in today. Also, looking deeper at the concept of being unpopular, it should be understood that as Christians in a fallen world, even if we gain popularity in our respective Christian circles, the world will still consider us unpopular. Why? Because Christians act differently. This is not about works based salvation or not. It is just the simple fact of Christ's words where He says, "You will know them by their fruits."
So the question I would ask young people today in high school and college is, are you willing to be unpopular for the sake of Christ? IMO, that is the least amount of commitment you can make for eternal salvation when Christians around the world are being horribly persecuted for their faith.
So, be unpopular for Christ. Live differently. Be ostracized, not because of doing wrong, but because of doing right.
