I just listend to "Open Wounds" by skillet. It's a great song, but I don't understand it's meaning or how it's a christian song. I understand it's about a bad relationship with his father and not about God, but I still don't see how it's a christian song. Can someone please explain the meaning of this song? I've heard alot of people say the song is inspireing and I don't understand

It's a "Christian" song because it is talking about an aspect of life, that is far too often real in our fallen world so full of sin and pain.

The Bible doesn't sugar-coat the reality of the evil of sin, neither should we.

A song doesn't need to say "Now here is a way out of your trouble" to be "Christian"

I'm sure that the members of Skillet hope that the song touches someone who has to live in such a broken up life.

I'm not much of a fan of the song. Let's push aside the issue of whether or not the song is "Christian" or "un-Christian".

It seems awfully convenient for me that Skillet totally changes gears at the instant they release an album to the mainstream audience. If you listen to most mainstream secular hard-rock, many of the songs are out of anger (which is not necessarily a bad thing) usually directed at some family members or anyone else who has hurt them. Now, as soon as Skillet re-releases their 'Collide' album, they add a song about, guess what - John being mad at his dad because of the way he has hurt him, just like every other hard-rock artist out there.

Now, if the song was genuinely inspired, fine, but it seems like Skillet is trying a little too hard to be like everyone else in secular music.

it's a great song. I love that Skillet has written some songs just straight up about the pain and frustrations of life and how it's not perfect even as a Christian. To me it's really a song to relate to more than anything else, and sometimes that means a ton just to know someone else...or another Christian has felt the same.

I'm exhausted right now, so I'll try my best not to tear your head off for blasting Skillet with out any real reason. First off, it's not an angry song, it's a tragic song. If you can't identify with it, that doesn't make it a bad song. Second, if they were really trying to be like every other hard rock band out there, wouldn't they have gone back and completely re-written every song on Collide? Unlike certain cross-over "artists", I don't see them writing intentionally ambiguous songs that could just as easily be about a boyfriend as they could about God.

I love that song, and I don't think as highly of Christian music as I do secular, so that's saying something. I don't know if they changed their tone because they tried to reach a non Christian audience, I don't usually listen to them. If they genuinely want to broaden their listening demographic, "I'm hurting" is going to be a lot more successful then "Praise Jesus". Not because Christians should be ashamed or unwilling to declare their love for God, but because that's something EVERYONE understands. And I really respect them for relasing something as bold as that in a mainstream Christian market.

C.S. Lewis said something along the lines of, "We don't need more Christian writers, we need more writers who are Christians." Makes sense, doesn't it? The message of what your'e saying, and being real and honest, is what's more likely to attract people to Christ, not generic praise songs.

As long as the song is honest, what is wrong with it. I mean yeah he's angry with his dad. That's allowed. And he doesn't cross the line into sin, either. The way some people are reacting, you'd think it was "A Call for Blood" by Hatebreed. Google the lyrics for that song and you will know the difference between righteous anger and sinful hatred.

I did give a reason, just not one you agree with. I love the group Skillet and I think their album Collide is great, I was just making an observation about one of their songs. I'm glad you were exhausted, so you didn't tear my head off for having an opinion.

Actually, you make a very good point. Even if they did produce a song specifically for the secular market, that would not be a bad thing, but actually a good thing. You're completely right. There is a question of motives, but who am I to determine their motives. This song could hook in the secular fans, then they could see what Christian music is all about.
