Can you explain what this means exactly?
What it means is being under the spiritual influence of a particular person who is presumably preaching and teaching Bible truth. I say "presumably" because many are sitting under the teaching of false teachers, false apostles, and false prophets. Unless we ourselves know Bible truth, we will not be able to discern what is true and what is false. False teaching can be extremely subtle.

That was worded very well.

I see how doing that could be an 'influence'. I always thought, 'well, you don't have to agree with everything' at least if you know your bible. But you are still influenced by the one preaching.
I don't think any of us are immune.
Something comparable would be the scripture that says 'bad company corrupts good morals'. That shows we are influenced by others. So we could be influenced by wrong teachings, too.

If a person is trying to learn from God—and people are an aid—and one loves and is devoted to the Lord and is obedient, then it is God who will protect a person from false teaching over the medium- and long-term.

The problem is that many Christians haven't matured to that point and thus need to have nontrivial guidance from elder-types. There is nothing wrong with this and it is the will of the Lord. Their job is to protect the new Christian and facilitate them knowing God and connecting directly to him. How long that takes essentially depends on the person. However, one humble before God will be open to learning through other people for the rest of their lives.

Just out of curiosity, where do you find that phrase? I've done a couple quick searches and don't find it listed in the Bible.

Or is it just a phrase heard in church and reflects what Job8 discusses?
