I guess I can still call myself a new Christian. God came into my life two years ago this November and my life has changed considerably.

One thing I cannot cope with, however, is the rate at which I continue to sin. I am trying desperately to stop, and I realise that the flesh is weak. That's why I turn to God. I've been praying on-and-off for about a year and a half, but there is still a particular sin that I simply cannot shake off.

Would anybody here please give me some advice or point me in the right direction? Needless to say there will be dozens of new Christians in the same situation as me and so any advice given would benefit many people who visit these forums.

Thank you for your time,

Nathan

um... your recognising the need to get rid of this sin is an indication of a step forward already! It does take time to stop sinning since our flesh is weak as you said, but then, nothing is impossible for God.

the thing is, the moment you start to despair and give up on trying, that's the moment when you'll be totally at the mercy of Satan. So keep praying, ask for forgiveness and help, and keep trying. When you're close to sinning, (whatever that is) distract yourself. I sometimes do that by reciting scriptures.. lol, and remembering how disappointed God is with me.. and pondering on His wrath as well. It takes time, but you'll get there eventually with the help from the Holy Spirit. Don't give up!

i agree with blessed-one! prayer is key always. not knowing your particular problem i would suggest also in finding an accountability partner. someone that you feel comfortable sharing your problem with and that could help talk with you when temptation wants to get the best of you! :prayer: for you! hang in there! we can do all things through God who strengthens us.

For myself, I have found the best way to get sin out of my life is to get my focus on Him more than myself. Only He can change me and the only way that happens is by being in His presense.

In your time along with Him, talk to Him like He's a friend. Tell Him all of your thoughts and your frustrations. Spend a lot of time telling Him how much you love Him and thank Him for all the changes you've seen in your life already. Thank Him for all the changes that He's still making in you.

Keep your eyes on Him and you'll see this sin drop away. We go towards what we are looking at. As long as you focus on yourself and where you are falling short you will go towards your own methods and become frustrated.

But as long as your eyes are on Him. . .He is all you will see and then you will be changed.

Trust me . . .it works.

I pray like mad. I have now begun to realize sins that I never considered sins before

It seems the closer I get to God the more He expects of me. Cursing was a BIG one. I didn't see the harm. Well when I heard the slang for poo coming out of the mouth of my babe I was sickened and furious. I then realized how God must feel when His children use the terminology. Now this crux is almost completely gone from my life as well as taking the Lord's name in vain.

Quite embaressed about it. Quite ashamed actually of my life before I asked God to forgive my sins and come into my life.
