  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

DEFINE: "Sin".

Romans 14:23b...whatever is not from (spirit-led) faith is sin.

SIN / SIN(S) / SINNERS / SIN NATURE...Defined and Explained

"SIN" :
414 times in 269 verses in the OT Hebrew concordance of the NASB...condition of sin, guilt of sin, punishment for sin, sin-offering

OT: Hebrew 2403 - "chatta'ath"

NT: Greek 266 - "hamartia" : 1)
a) to be without a share in
b) to miss the mark
c) to err, be mistaken
d) to miss or wander from the path of uprightness and honour, to do or go wrong
e) to wander from the law of God, violate God's law, sin
2) that which is done wrong, sin, an offence, a violation of the divine law in thought or in act
3) collectively, the complex or aggregate of sins committed either by a single person or by many

My Attempted DEFINITIONS:

1. SIN = "falling short" = ANYTHING contrary to the perfect CHARACTER and ATTRIBUTES of the TRI-UNE GOD...ALL fall short!

Romans 3:23 (NASB)... for all have sinned and fall short of the "glory of God",

(This is the spiritual gap between God's perfect good and Man's imperfections.)

2. SIN(S) = personal "missing the marks" = willful or ignorant, commission or omission, "trespasses" that cause loss of fellowship with / create a barrier between God and Man...
For Believers, these can be FORGIVEN! 1 John 1
For UNbelievers, SALVATION is first required.
For REMEDY for believers, CONFESSION (spiritually agreeing with God)... 1 John 1

3. SIN NATURE = the natural-born innate capacity and inclination to do / not do those things that can in no way commend Man and his "works" to God...Man's exercising God-given "free will" to REJECT God.
This natural tendency is SPIRITUALLY changed by the SALVATION / REDEMPTION EVENT, BUT it still rears its ugly head in the BODY / SOUL combo ("flesh") during the SANCTIFICATION PROCESS.

4. IMPUTED SIN:?...Romans 5:12. 15-17 (NIV)...Death Through Adam, Life Through Christ = IMPUTED RIGHTEOUSNESS!

"original sin"
is a false doctrine! ~= the first wilfull disobedience of A&E is NOT in our DNA! SEE:

Original Sin?

2 Corinthians 5:21...= IMPUTED RIGHTEOUSNESS!
He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God IN Him.

How believers deal with SIN(S) in their lives after salvation
...>>> the "carnal Christ-follower " must CONFESS (agree with God)...
1 John 1: 5-10...Walking in the Light

1 Peter 3: 15-22 (NIV1984)...substitutionary atonement
For Christ (Jesus the God-Man) died FOR (ALL) sin(s) once FOR ALL,
the righteous (Jesus the God-Man) FOR the unrighteous,(all natural men with IMPUTED SIN)
to bring you to God. (salvation and reconciliation)

QUESTIONS:
1. Did A&E "sin"? Commit "sin(s)"? Have a "sin nature"?
2. Give examples of ENUMERATED/NAMES of "SIN(S)". E.G.: Galatians 5:19; Matthew 15:19
3. Is being outside the will of God a "sin"?

Looks like you pretty much covered it. Trespass, transgression, etc. I enjoy sharing with people that they are not responsible for being born 'missing the mark,' and that it is for this very reason that God came to die for us so that his word concerning us would not become void. He created us for a reason, we were then marred beyond recognition, and now, through his Blood and Water, we are born from his heart's womb--born from above (as opposed to from below, which happened the first time we were born).

god only gave one command. Do not eat of that tree or you will die the deaths.
And therefor disobeying it is the only sin man can do.
Not disobeying it means rightouesness. Repentance means to stop disobeying it. Therefor repentance is the only commandment god gives man.

"therefor he now commands every man every place to repent"

True. For those who consciously sin. And the person needs to be mature to do that. Scripture is explicit about maturity in the Torah: all persons 20 years of age and younger are not held responsible for the sins of their fathers.

RESPONSE TO POST # 4: Q: " God only gave one "command".....''

A: 1. to A&E in Eden?
2. to the Abramic Nations?
3. to Moses?
4. Throughout the OT?
5. Throughout the NT?
6. Through Jesus?
7. Through apostles/disciples/authors of 66 books?

Q2: "repentance" is the only commandment that God gives man.".

Illogical + UN-Scriptural.

My views on " Repent / Repentance":

" repent / repentance" is not a pre-requisite of nor condition for the salvation ..as outlined in John 3 + Ephesians.
Grace and Spirit-led and given FAITH are the sole keys. God calls. Man accepts.
Man's spirit is changed: born again from above....salvation!

REPENT (all cites NASB) = spiritually "THINK AGAIN"?: = STOP + spiritually TURN AROUND toward GOD?

metamelomai - me-tä-me'-lo-mi - repent, repent (one's) self
metanoeo - me-tä-no-e'-o - repent
ametameletos - ä-me-tä-me'-la-tos - without repentance, not to be repented of
metanoia - me-tä'-noi-ä - repentance

DICTIONARY:...intransitive verb
1: to turn from sin and dedicate oneself to the amendment of one's life
2a : to feel regret or contrition b : to change one's mind

To Me, repent simply means: RE-THINK...spiritually turning to God when He calls / draws you.

Repentance in context has TWO meanings:

1. repent UNTO salvation...God calls/draws you to Him from sinful self...turning to God to ACCEPT THE GIFT!

e.g. Jesus preached:

Mark 1 (NASB)...Jesus Preaches in Galilee
14 Now after John (the Baptizer) had been taken into custody, Jesus came into Galilee,
preaching the gospel (good news) of God, 15 and saying,
“The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; (Jesus the Divine Messiah had come!)
repent AND believe in the "gospel".” (Jesus the Divine Messiah had come!)

Luke 24...Jesus: AFTER The Resurrection
47 and that repentance for (because of?) forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.

Romans 2 (NASB)
4 Or do you think lightly of the riches of His kindness and tolerance and patience,
not knowing that the kindness (GRACE!) of God (the Holy Spirit) LEADS you to repentance?

2 Cor. 7:10
For the sorrow that is according to the will of God produces a repentance without regret,
leading to salvation,
but the sorrow of the world produces death.

2 Peter 3:9
The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness,
but is patient toward you, (unbelievers?)
not wishing for ANY to perish
but for ALL to come to repentance.

2 Timothy 2:25
with gentleness correcting those who are in opposition,
if perhaps God may grant them repentance leading to the knowledge of the truth,

2. repent BACK into fellowship after sinning...e.g. The Parable of the Prodigal Son

Luke 15 (NASB)...Jesus and the Parable of "The Lost Coin"
10 In the same way, I tell you,
there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”

Repentance for believers involves CONFESSION
and claiming the cleansing and forgiveness of sins purchased by Jesus' completed work on the Cross.

1 John 1...God Is Light
5 This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is Light,
and in Him there is no darkness at all.
6 If we say that we have FELLOWSHIP with Him and yet walk in the darkness,
we lie and do not PRACTICE the truth;
7 but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have FELLOWSHIP with "one another", (BELIEVERS) and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.
8 If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us.
9 If we confess (AGREE WITH GOD ABOUT) our sins,
He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar and His word is not in us.

The enumerated/named sins are not just "symptoms".
They are clarifications of specific prohibitions and commands made into laws and precepts.

Sin separates Man from God. God gave Man clear and specific laws to define sin.

Romans 2 (NASB)
12 For all who have sinned without the (Mosaic) Law will also perish without the Law, and all who have sinned under the Law will be judged by the Law;
13 for it is not the hearers of the Law who are just before God, but the doers of the Law will be justified. 14 For when Gentiles who do not have the Law do instinctively the things of the Law, these, not having the Law, are a law to themselves (conscience?),
15 in that they show the work of the Law written in their hearts, their conscience bearing witness and their thoughts alternately accusing or else defending them,
16 on the day when, according to my gospel, God will judge the secrets of men through Christ Jesus.

Therefor repentance is the only commandment god gives man.
Repent? From what exactly? From breaking all the other commands ....

If there are no other commands then repentance is moot.
