  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

THe ozone generated in a volotile storm IS a rush by itself. I remember when I was a kid a tornado one came right over our house. Right in front of me it hit a horse barn accross the road. The barn exploded and the funnel headed right towards our house. I was excited but frozen to the spot as I was watching it. Dad grabbed me and hurried all of us to the basement where we got on our knees and started to pray as it headed directly towards us. At the last second it "jumped" over our house. Houses on either side of us had extensive damage and the one behind us disentegrated. There wasn't a shingle on our house disturbed. God is good. The next sunday the pastor stood in the pulpit and related what had happened to them at their house. He said that there were two full trash cans in the back of the house. The funnel picked up both of the cans, dumped the trash on their house and then put them down on the front lawn with the lid back on the one can! Truth is stranger than fiction.

If it's any consolation, it's been decades (about two, it was 1987) since a tornado hit the city. And I can't remember hearing of any tornados prior to that one, despite living in the city for years.

Also, the path of tornados tends to stick to flat, open areas; so it was mostly the powerline right-of-ways and industrial parks (and Evergreen trailer park, where my sister had been living until a few months before) that were damaged. The powerline damage was significant, but fortunately the tornado turned aside just before it hit the primary Edmonton electrical substation, so even the power outages were limited (admittedly, it's a very old substation and some of us did speculate that replacing the old equipment with state-of-the art equipment would have been an upside).

Tornados hit the Sylvan lake area much more frequently, which makes me more queasy, because that's where the Lutheran Bible Camp is located (Kuriakos -- a lovely place). Our children sat one out in the "basement" of the arts-and-crafts building the summer before last. Fortunately, Kuriakos is in the lee of a hill, so they probably didn't have that much to worry about as long as they stayed low; but when we drove up to fetch them the next day you could see places where crops were flattened in a circular pattern, where the tornado had apparently touched down and then "skipped". It made me appreciate the gentle shelter of that hillside, and God's hand over my children!

Storms can be so scary. I was stuck outside when there was a tornado warning in Minnesota...I was trying to get the dog of the family I was living with inside with me... I was needless to say having trouble. It was amazing though...There was some sort of rush even though I was scared.

I've never seen a "tornado" as on land. I've seen little duststorms that are like tornadoes. I've seen waterspouts when out with my dad while he's been fishing. That can be a bit scary because you never know if they are coming to the land or not.

I've been inside when any tornadoes have been around where I've been - at least as far as I know!

Okay, I had posted this on a limerick thread, but wanted some other people to read it. It seems appropriate for Lutherans to read.

I'd be one to say let's'll
Go out and get a pretzel!
If eating pretzels is sin,
What trouble we're in,
And glad that we don't follow Tetzel!

I have 4 bottles of homemade Limoncello in the freezer. Even drinking it every night, I figure it'll take atleast 8-10 months to polish it off.
Don't hold out on me. How about a glass? So did you make it yourself?

The weather's great here right now, about 50 degrees and clear as a bell. Usually it's raining here in Oregon by now, but it hasn't rained for a few days.

I have a son in Silverton OR and a father-in-law in Brookings. Inlaw has a place about 50 yrds from beach. Would love to inherit the property.

Wow that post was a loooooong time ago! No worries, there's plenty of Limoncello left, and ...uh...yes, I made it myself. Got my recipe from a former roommate, who is from Sicily.

A glass of (virtual) Limoncello to you....

we have a cold front on the way...supposed to be about 41 in the morning...for the folks around here that's arctic weather...

Arctic weather? Ha! My mom would laugh at their puniness while she went about in jeans and a short-sleeve top of some kind, no coat, and then she'd say it wasn't cool enough.

Well... maybe at 45 she would... 41 she finds comfortable. I'm beginning to think my mother is an eskimo.

I wish it was 40 here, can't see out my office window due to the snow. Got another Alberta Clipper going through. Temps in 20' wind about 35 mph. Got a few inches of snow so now we have from 0 to 6 feet depending on location.

Still have soil testing to do, this isn't good. Fields have been so wet this fall it hasn't been possible to get them done. If we wouldn't have had the blizzard the 4th of October we would have been in pretty good shape.

Here's my office window.

Heh... interestingly, here in Edmonton we haven't really had ANY snow yet so it's funny that you mention Alberta storms

What sort of soil testing? (I work in the Pesticide Residues department of an analytical lab so it's kinda a professional interest...)
