  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The song reminds me of philosophy discussions. I curiously observe discussions with intrigue. The world beyond (the metaphysical the transcendent, the religious) is compelling. The detailed awareness makes me feel alive. But it's "only wathcing" in the sense that it is intellection and observation of the online virtual world, as distinct to practical action int the real one. I am confident and proud of my opinions, but people would like to argue I "rant an invented position", merely talk nonsense or falsehood. I am (or am accused of being) a witness to what I want to see (i.e. suffer from confirmation bias and selective attention), and glorify my misconception (that for example God exists). I love the sound of my own voice (i.e. feel affection for my beliefs, and people migh call one another self centred rather than truth centred, more focused on their feelings and ego defences rather than being humble in the face of reality). I could talk for eternity about philosophy, but what "in the end has been achieved?" (are these discussions fruitless in the face of the worlds problems, is it mere mental masturbation and navel gazing as people can accuse?). I lend myself when it suits me (it is difficult to be humble when faced with a good counter argument if one is attatched to opinion). I think that philsophy is an "elevated" subject, but does preaching lead to action (or can it in www discussion when our interlocutors are thousands of miles away. How can someone so far away claim to know what is good and right for me?). I am in a "land so distant" so I cannot really dictate to others because what do I know about the intimacies and issues they face. Can a 'entertaining discussion' really do justice to the exigencies of peoples lives? We accuse one another of verbal crusades and invented positions, and people unfamiliar with internet debate might be seduced by the appearance of rationality or superiority which skillful rhetoric, the put downs and partisan characterisations of others can give.

Interesting song. A little too much "tell" and not enough "show" for my taste though. I can readily discern though who is being indicted here - vociferous blowhards who think they know what they're talking about whereas really they don't have much of a clue.

I think its a fine line to tread really. We all have our own picture of reality. It's good to be an individualist with one's views but at the same time not become so extreme as to detach yourself from reality, and regress in your own, totally private, egotistical shell of "I am right."
